sorry for not explaining myself earlier (was in a rush)

i would have used debian (i think) and mainly because of my friends influenced me to start using linux (and ofcourse gentoo) i've always wanted to test it, but i must admit I was persueded to use gentoo and if gentoo hadn't existed i think they would have been using debian

I tried RedHat, didn't like it.....tried Slackware.....meh.....

Tried Linux From Scratch, thought it was cool, but it took soooooo long to install...then I met Gentoo.
Face it, we are all noobs.

On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux?

but i like gentoo, and recommended to everyone.

Sure it's nice. But isn't the company that developed BeOS out of business? AFAIK, it is certainly not being developed (at the same pace) anymore.

If Gentoo never existed some one would have come along and created it and I would be using it anyways. Gentoo.

Yes, Be Incorporated is dead.

BeOS lives.

Pick your flavor:

Slack or Debian

I've use most Linux distro's and don't really care for RPM based distro's, (they still have some good qualites though)

Great! OpenBeOS and Blueeyedos look promising. And YellowTab looked absolutely wonderful. But it's a commercial distro. And I'd rather use any of the free linux distros than their Zeta.

Please search before you post. We had this "what if Gentoo didn't exist" scenario and plenty of other threads about alternatives before.
