How to prevent KDE 3.5.10 from upgrading to KDE 4.1.2?

  • Quote

My system is completely testing (~x86) and now, after emerge --sync, portage offers me to upgrade to kde 4.1.2

I dont like kde4 so i would rather leave old kde3 on my laptop. Is there an easy way to prevent my kde3 from upgrading without putting the whole stuff (over 80 packages) into package.mask?

you have to put it all into package.mask (or a file in the package.mask directory if you have directories instead of files). The complete list is as follows:

If your world file is clean (although that's a pretty big "if"), you should only really have to mask the specific meta packages you installed, for example if kde-base/kde-meta is the only kde package you emerged yourself, letting portage handle all the dependencies, then adding ">=kde-base/kde-meta-4" should be all you need.

Alternatively, replacing kde-base/kde-meta with kde-base/kde-meta:3.5 in your world file (a simple `emerge -C kde-meta && emerge kde-meta:3.5` should do it if you don't want to edit the file manually) will remove the need to mask anything, however this still depends on the world file being clean.

`grep ^kde /var/lib/portage/world` should give you an idea of the current state of your world file in relation to kde, preferably only kde-base/*-meta and kde-misc/* entries should be in there.

I just found out that masking following packages is absolutely sufficient for my system. Please report if it worked for you too ...

package.mask

Code: Select all

>=kde-base/kdelibs-4.1.2
>=kde-base/kcalc-4.1.2
>=kde-base/kstart-4.1.2
>=kde-base/ksnapshot-4.1.2
>=kde-base/kmenuedit-4.1.2

No, I'm afraid not. Would be nice if portage had wildcard support for that.
Anyway, you can copy the list above, or use mine, that you can drop in /etc/portage/package.mask/

KDE 4.1.x is slotted so installing it does not affect your KDE 3.5.x installation. It only gives you the option to use either KDE 3.5 or KDE 4.1.

Is the size of package.mask significant for portage speed?

So you mean even if I have already installed version 4.1.2, my version 3.5.10 should still work?
Unfortunately doesn't and I am not sure what to do because I am not very happy with just 4.1,
I imagine to have both and get rid of old only when all thinks I need already works there...

Yeah- I just got the same thing showing up on my usual emerge -upD @world. It wants to put kde-4.1.2 in a slot, and now i read here that's not yet working correctly. This is on my ~x86 Main Gentoo kde-3.5.10 install, whch I've had for years. I want to remain with 3.5.10 on this box until at least kde-4.2.1 is officially released, so I'll mask for now.

However, I've been running kde-svn on several testing boxes for about a year, so I know the ins and outs of kde-4.x.x, and I'm just not ready to make the change on my main install, that I use for day-to day work.

If 4.1.2 can co-exist with the same user and kde-3.5.10 rock solid in its own slot, I might go for that, but this thread makes it sound pretty shaky, at best. I fear quite a few users are going to wind up with problems if they try this right now.

Am I incorrect, and this will work reliably right now? I'd like to hear about some more success stories before I'd try it on my main box.
Main box- AsRock x370 Gaming K4
Ryzen 7 3700x, 3.6GHz, 16GB GSkill Flare DDR4 3200mhz
Samsung SATA 1000GB, Radeon HD R7 350 2GB DDR5
OpenRC Gentoo ~amd64 plasma, glibc-2.41-r2, gcc-15.1.0
kernel-6.15.6 USE=experimental python3.13.3

Personally, I've found that just sticking the following lines into my /etc/portage/package.mask stopped the irritation that is the kde-4 invasion:

Code: Select all

>=kde-base/kde-meta-4.0.0
>=kde-base/kdelibs-4.0.0
The only person who says kde-3.5.x and kde-4.x don't effect each other is someone who has never truly had the "pleasure" of running both on the same system. What a freakin' mess that was! The plus side was all I had to do to get good old 3.5.x back was completely unmerge kde-4.x, and nuke any vestige of it. But I was thinking I'd never get my kde-3.5 back.

Fortunately, I did, but the experience soured me on kde-4. I'll wait until it's as rock solid as kde-3.5.x before I try that move again.

Blessed be!

Looks like ktorrent-3.1.4 wants to pull in some KDE4 stuff. I currently have ktorrent-2.2.4 installed, so I added this to my package.mask:

Code: Select all

~net-p2p/ktorrent-3.1.4

Unfortunately, it became clear that the above wasn't enough...therefore, to be sure I never have to deal with it, I've completely locked out all 272 kde-4 packages. My deepest, heart-felt hanks to the proponents of split ebuilds.

NOT!

You should only have to mask the kde packages within your world file, I would have thought...

No, I tried to start a emerge -aev world at about package 242 left to go. emerge --resume didn't work, because I was unmerging some kernel source packages after setting up my kernel workshop. I salvaged the list of packages, most of which were kde split ebuilds. :roll: :evil:

I cleaned the list of files, and upon trying to reemerge manually, the kde packages wanted to go to version 4.1.2. That was a lot of packages! I wound up having to start the emerge -aev over. Fortunately, the machine on which it was doing it's thing is really fast. Be that as it may, it definitely wanted to start pulling in and defaulting to kde-4.1.2 packages.

So, yes, you have to discretely and COMPLETELY mask all the kde-4.1.2 packages (and some amount of dependencies and such), or it will try to infiltrate your system, like the insidious cancer that it is.

Ok, it's not that bad...but it is irritating. At the moment, the long list above provided by termite is in my /etc/portage/package.mask file. It's the only sure way to keep kde-3.5.x safe, and kde-4.x at bay. Strange, but true.

Blessed be!
Pappy
