openoffice-bin vs. openoffice

Hi,

Because openoffice is such a big package, you try to install openoffice-bin by default.

I experienced a lot of crashes, each 5 Minutes to be exactly, while working with the binary package.
I was unable to save documents, even a single right click could have killed the application.

I installed the openoffice package this night, and it works great. It is not only more than twice as fast, It runs also stable.

Anybody experienced the same problems?

I've only used the binary package shortly (to edit one document for my final exam, after I finished it I removed OpenOffice again) but I did not experience any crashes or anything of the like. Everything worked nicely, I haven't compiled OpenOffice from source so I can't comment on speed. In general, if you ask me, it's always worth compiling if you got a recent CPU though.

i alway's wondered if you compiled it from source does it really seem faster.?
I perfer source so it's not just like an exe it's compiled to my system..
hopefully i didn't sound like a newb saying this just 2 cents..

To me it seemed faster afterwards. I also had no crashes afterwards.

Afaik the bin is 32-bit and if you compile it you have a 64-bit version of OO.

In fact, but I use the 32 bits OpenOffice 3.0 with any problem right now

right now, compiled 32 bit version (at least the 64 bit
version seems ok to me) of OO 3 has a severe bug which causes
total freeze up in (at least) ooimpress and oocalc
(see thread about memory corruption). So watch out!

For me the largest advantage of app-office/openoffice is that it can use FreeType with BCI enabled to render legible fonts. It should start faster when most necessary 64-bit libraries are already in memory, but I have not used app-office/openoffice-bin since 2.4.1.

The difference of app-office/openoffice (non-bin) used to be that it was an adapted version by ximian. This meant it had custom icons and a better gnome integration. At the time (talking years back here) it surely was worthwhile. Apart from this surely some other perks I can't remember currently (maybe spellchecking? and only those dic's for your locale?). Not sure if this still stands!? Ximian has disappeared but maybe their legacy is still being recycled. I haven't used the bin version in a very long time so if someone can tell me how it compares that would be great. Or if anyone knows any differences that still exist?

The only difference that I see, it that when the non-bin start, we see the Gentoo logo on the right corner.

My experience is that the compiled version is significantly faster starting. And it also is a better fit to the rest of the desktop if you are running KDE.
