What OS would you've used if gentoo didn't exist

I guess debian, as it is the linux disto which I feel is quite close to gentoo and has a lot of momentum.

Zynot - Well once it's ready for a release that is.

FreeBSD is also quite nice, but not a very nice desktop OS IMHO.

FreeBSD on desktop is much faster than linux.....

Not in my experience, and -CURRENT has horrible interactivity, so it's basically useless compare to Linux on my desktop.

I had slackware installed before I tried gentoo, and I was happy with that. Gentoo is better though, less bloated and a nicer community. I like portage too... Not that slackware is very bloated compared to other distros, but in gentoo you don't even get an ftp-program, or a mail program, nothing. Everything is your choice!

prolly debian for me....maily 'cause I'm lazy and like having a system like portage there (apt-get) to do all the work for me and keep track of stuff.

I'd probably still be working between Mandrake and Red Hat, sad to say.

I'd tried loads, but only those two seemed to work with all my hardware until I found Gentoo, which I love.

I would have tried Debian, but I could never figure out what I needed to download.

debian or FreeBSD... after some disappointment with debian I was thinking about FreeBSD and gentoo and ended with gentoo, which is kinda perfect for me

anyway, IMHO if there'd be no gentoo, another similar distro would be created

If not for Gentoo, I'd still be using Linux From Scratch (LFS).

I've noticed that Linux is MUCH MUCH faster on the desktop than FreeBSD.

I'd probably using Debian, that's what I used before gentoo, but I was getting a bit disgruntled with it (no KDE 3.0 and GNOME 2.0!)

I had RH installed, but didn't like it, so never used it. Tried debian, but thought it was a pain in the arse to get installed (never got beyond trying to make CDs).

I did burn some FreeBSD CDs, but never got around to installing. So, either FreeBSD, Debian or maybe LFS (though I didn't know about it then).

I'm the first one who voted for Windows. Sadly that's because that's what I'm using (Windows XP) for now until I can get broadband or a job to order Gentoo.

I had Gentoo installed until I wanted to repartition and install BeOS, but since I did that I lost my DSL connection and it's such a pain on a modem. I don't have the patience some people do.

Hmm.. that's a tough one.

I mostly installed Gentoo in my second box just to have something to mess around with, and because I had heard it was a great distro. If gentoo didn't exist, I'd probably have FreeBSD on this box, or maybe Slack. Or maybe Debian for the nth time.

I'd definitely still be using my Windows box as my primary desktop if it weren't for gentoo.

But fortunately, I don't have to make that choice.

If I were able to install it, Debian. And Red Hat. Red Hat was my previous distribution. When my new HD is delivered, I'm going to have partitions for Red Hat again. I might try FreeBSD as well.
