Tightvnc copy&paste problem

  • Quote

Post by faser » Sat Aug 30, 2008 7:50 am

Hi All,

I have a handful of servers running and basically administrate all of them via VNC. But For the last 3 or 4 machines I installed I have the problem that copy&paste via VNC is not working anymore. I access the machines using the Ultravnc client on my windows machine.
On the old server I just can mark stuff with the mouse and can paste it on the windows machine with CTRL-P and also the otherway around I can copy it on the windows machine with CTRL-C and past it in the VNC machine with the middle mouse button.
But on all my new machines I can not copy&paste between the two machines. I can not remember to have done anything different during installation and also as the old server is uptodate I have the same tightvnc versions running on all of them.

svr-9 ~ # eix tightvnc

Installed versions: 1.3.9-r1(13:26:16 02/20/08)(java server tcpd)

Description: A great client/server software package allowing remote network access to graphical desktops.

Any ideas?

Hi,

is there anybody out there who can help or at least someone who experienced the same behavior?

Cheers

One thing with X is that it has a very retarded clipboard system; There are 2 (Technically 3) and they are completely seperate.

Highlighting text will 'copy' it into one buffer, whereas using CTRL+C/X will put it in another.

Most VNCs only support the second buffer (Which is the 'proper' X clipboard) so trying to use the middle button to paste stuff usually won't work because it pulls it from the SEL buffer instead.

To get around this, I use program called autocutsel which automatically syncs the SEL and Primary clipboard buffers.

It is not a great solution, but I've not found something better...

Still not working

Hi Cyker,

thanks for the reply. That is actually also the info I found on the net. But somehow autocutsel doesn't solve my problem. It is still not working.
And the more important point is that on other servers using the same X and tightvnc it is working fine.

Cheers

Hmm... latest TightVNC client and server I assume? (1.3.9)

Also, when you select/copy stuff, does it get logged in the window autocutsel is running in? (You will need to run it as "autocutsel -verbose -debug")

Hi Cyker,

yes I run 1.3.9-r1!

When I have running autocutsel -verbose -debug and:

1. Mark something the the mouse nothing happens
2. Use the copy menu it says "Selection changed...", "New Value....", "sel -> cut...", "Updating buffer"

Nevertheless none of the two methods changed (transferred) the copied value to the windows client.

Cheers

Hmm... I am not sure then...

I have had occasions where the clipboard system borked, but usually it's down to some application. Other times, I have to reset the VNC server, but usually it's been okay... :/

I don't suppose you've tried any of the other VNC servers?

(I'm still waiting for TightVNC to move to the newer RealVNC base code :))
