I can't get to it from work now.
Verified host was up with various web based ping/tracepath tools.

ping/tracepath fails from work :evil:

I used gentoo wiki yesterday and today for hours.

If you REALLY need something off of gentoo-wiki.com when its down, you could always search Google Cache for it. (Just remember to check the datestamp at the top of the page to see when google fetched it last.)

google search box example:
KDE4 HOWTO site:gentoo-wiki.com

Then just click on "cache" instead of the link.

Yes, I know its a bad way of doing business so don't bother telling me that, however if you REALLY REALLY REALLY need something off of there NOW when its down, its better than refreshing the page and praying to RMS or selling your soul to Bill Gates. Since we already have beaten the "gentoo-wiki.com is out of date or inaccurate" to death in this thread, no need to rehash that either. It just means the odds are Google has had it cached for years now.

What happened to Gentoo-wiki?

  • Quote

Post by audiodef » Fri Oct 17, 2008 7:29 pm

Hey, gentoo-wiki.org is down. What happened? That site has some VERY valuable info I was just looking for (at the mo, the Networkmanager Howto).

I hope this site isn't getting scrapped.

I would suggest looking on the Google cache for the time being.

The wiki goes down from time to time. It's a regular occurrence and it always comes back. Nothing to worry about. Just have patience (or donate money/hardware to solve their problems).

The reply when using OpenDNS servers is OK:
Hmm, gentoo-wiki.com isn't loading right now.

The computers that run gentoo-wiki.com are having some trouble. Usually this is just a temporary problem, so you might want to try again in a few minutes.
well, a little hint at least :)

is what I get when using OpenDNS for my DNS resolution. Better than a blank page at least.

It is a private initiative, not officially part of the Gentoo Linux project. It does however provide a very useful service, I think we all agree on that.

I didn't know the wiki was not part of gentoo. I think now is a good time to help the owner of the gentoo-wiki and make it gentoo officially.

Merged four of the above eight posts here (I lost track of which four :oops:), from [post=5251041]a thread started by audiodef[/post].

I use both of these sites, gentoo-portage.com more than gentoo-wiki.com, so I did not realize there were any problems with the wiki.

As for gentoo-portage.com, yesterday seemed to be a return to normal from the day before where the site was 'parked by godaddy.com'.

Just so you know.

Gentoo Wiki seems to have gone down at my end also.

Could some kind soul shed some light if its some scheduled maintenance or something more sinister?

Thanks

I've sent a message to the admin via his Facebook account. No response as yet; I'm currently in the #gentoo channel on EFNet asking some other guys if they know more.

EDIT: The admin has said that it's a routing issue to his servers. His hosting provider hasn't given him a resolution yet, from what I can gather.

In summary, it does not mean we're going to lose our beloved gentoo-wiki.com. I imagine regular service will resume soon. Yay!

both gentoo-wiki and gentoo portage

Nameservers for gentoo-portage.com:

* ns1.tiau4.com returned (SERVFAIL)
* ns2.tiau4.com returned (SERVFAIL)

so hopefully they will sort it out soon :)
