problem with subtitle text encoding in vlc

Hi,

I'm having a problem with a .ogm video with embbeded subtitle. It keeps on giving error messages and seems to fail to reproduce a great part of the subtitle due to encoding problem. As a matter of fact the video does contain 2 subtitle, one in english which is no problem. My guess is it is because there are few accents in this subtitle. The other subtitle is in French and lead to much more problems. This error message is reported:

Code: Select all

[00000296] subsdec decoder error: failed to convert subtitle encoding.
Try manually setting a character-encoding before you open the file.
I've seen that it is possible to adjust the text encoding of the subtitle when the sub title is contained in an external file but not when embeded in a single media file which is the case here (ogm extension). Any idea what I can do to fix this?

You can set the encoding in Tools > Preferences > Subtitles&OSD > Default encoding

Well I didn't find were you told me to look at. I use version 0.8.6i here.

I "opened" the container using ogmdemux and I opened the subtitle (srt) file in kate and could found that the encodng is iso 8859-1 instead of utf-8.

The first place I found how I can fix this is in the open file dialogue, selected "use a subtitle file" then click on advanced settings, selected the right subtitle encoding but unfortunatly the configuration is lost at next use of vlc...

Here a snapshot of preferences > Subtitles/OSD:
