compiz will not start with latest fglrx driver

I though I would try getting compiz to work again - it stoped working in one of my upgrades a few months back.

Well, I seem to have everything working with fglrx so it should work, but it doesn't. Here is what it reports when I try to launch compiz:

Code: Select all

 ~ $ compiz --replace
compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Here are parts of my xorg log file that show that both compositing and AIGLX are working:

Code: Select all

 ~ $ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep Composite
(**) Extension "Composite" is enabled

Code: Select all

 ~ $ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep AIGLX
(**) Option "AIGLX" "on"
(**) AIGLX enabled

I even tried going back to xorg-server-1.3 where I think I last had it working but it still doesn't work.

Does anyone know what is wrong here? What am I missing?

Thanks for any help.

maybe this will help: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL/Troubl ... is_missing

otherwise: try google for GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap_is_missing (link)

When i used fglrx (i moved to nvidia recently and with the closed source drivers from nvidia almost everything worked out of the box) i remarked that things depend on the software installed. Whenever a new version of fglrx was released i tried it out, most of the time some things just broke (xv mostly and i never really tried compiz but when i did performance was so bad that it was barely usable...) So probably you'll have to use the good old trial and error method to find a combination of x-server, compiz and fglrx that works for you. Btw. what card are you using? If your card is supported i would give the open-source r500 a try from what i've read recently they finally managed to get 3d working too and i guess that should be enough for compiz and some shiny effects....
Raise your beers up high...

Hey thanks! That did it. And after I launcched it manually once this way fusion-icon started launching it again like it should. Makes no sense to me but as long as it works then cool!
