Code: Select all

 * IMPORTANT: 5 config files in '/etc' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge
 * man page to learn how to update config files.

!!! existing preserved libs:
>>> package: sys-libs/libcap-2.08-r1
 *  - /lib64/libcap.so.1
 *  - /lib64/libcap.so.1.10
>>> package: media-libs/x264-svn-20089999
 *  - /usr/lib64/libx264.so.56
>>> package: dev-libs/nss-3.12_beta2
 *  - /usr/lib64/nss/libsqlite3.so
 *  - /usr/lib64/nss/libsqlite3.so.12
>>> package: media-gfx/imagemagick-6.3.9.7
 *  - /usr/lib64/libMagick.so.10
 *  - /usr/lib64/libMagick.so.10.0.10
 *  - /usr/lib64/libWand.so.10
 *  - /usr/lib64/libWand.so.10.0.10
Use emerge @preserved-rebuild to rebuild packages using these libraries
I'm doing emerge @preserved-rebuild but this list appears after every emerge. What do I need to do or how can I remove this message? :evil:

Thanks :roll:

This thread is very interesting, because it's the first time that I see the @preserved-rebuild feature.

ye guess that was it, because gail gets pulled into gtk+ at the gnomeoverlay

Code: Select all

!!! existing preserved libs:
>>> package: gnome-base/gail-1000
 *  - /usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18
 *  - /usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
Use emerge @preserved-rebuild to rebuild packages using these libraries
[root@lynchen] [/usr/layman/myOverlay]
% equery files gtk+ | grep libgailutil                                                                                                [15:48]
/usr/lib/libgailutil.la
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18

ok thats how the gail ebuild looks like from the overlay i use:

Code: Select all

[root@lynchen] [/usr/layman/gnome/gnome-base/gail]
% cat gail-1000.ebuild                                                                                                                [17:06]
# Copyright 2008 Gentoo Foundation
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
# $Header: $

DESCRIPTION="Dummy gail to handle migration to gtk+"
HOMEPAGE="http://gnome.gentoo.org"

LICENSE="GPL-2"
SLOT="0"
KEYWORDS="~alpha ~amd64 ~arm ~hppa ~ia64 ~ppc ~ppc64 ~sh ~sparc ~x86 ~x86-fbsd"
IUSE=""

PDEPEND=">=x11-libs/gtk+-2.13.0"
its just a dummy package, but why does portage "think" that this package contains

Code: Select all

[root@lynchen] [/usr/layman/myOverlay]
% equery files gail | grep libgailutil [16:38]
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
as these should be in gtk+ now (again from the gnome-overlay):

Code: Select all

!!! existing preserved libs:
>>> package: gnome-base/gail-1000
 *  - /usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18
 *  - /usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
Use emerge @preserved-rebuild to rebuild packages using these libraries
[root@lynchen] [/usr/layman/myOverlay]
% equery files gtk+ | grep libgailutil                                                                                                [15:48]
/usr/lib/libgailutil.la
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
[root@lynchen] [/usr/layman/myOverlay]
% equery files gail | grep libgailutil [16:38]
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
so im getting

Code: Select all

!!! existing preserved libs:
>>> package: gnome-base/gail-1000
 *  - /usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18
 *  - /usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
Use emerge @preserved-rebuild to rebuild packages using these libraries
after each emerge, even after applying all ur suggestions.

any other ideas?

Taking a guess, its because you still have gnome-base/gail-1.22* installed. It seems that " gtk+-2.13.0 " is not providing " libgailutil " but that gail is

Code: Select all

equery f gnome-base/gail-1.22.1
.....
/usr/lib/libgailutil.la
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so -> libgailutil.so.18.0.1
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18 -> libgailutil.so.18.0.1
/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
To see if gtk is providing libgailutil try

Code: Select all

equery f x11-libs/gtk+-2.13.2| grep libgailutil

Probably another instance of [bug]215242[/bug] (preserve-libs not working correctly when a library is moved between packages)

@genone ye its exactly like this, is there a way to manually remove this entry from emerge's logs?

The easiest way is probably to temporarily rename the files, upgrade/rebuild/unmerge some random package (so portage checks for library changes and notices that the files are no longer there and removes them from the list of preserved libs), then rename them back.

What I did when I just had a similar problem and upgrading mesa caused @preserved-rebuild to want to emerge about 85 packages and after a full emerge of those packages, it still wanted to again emerge those packages as the message never went away, I unmerged mesa, reemerged mesa, ran revdep-rebuild which showed no missing libraries, and My system was normal again.

So is it safe to ignore this feature until it is more stable?

If revdep says all OK is there anything but false positives in the @preserve-libs output?

thx

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago, and it eventually went away.

I would like to ask to anyone more knowledgeable about the internals of portage if it's possible that this is caused by two concurrent emerges.

I mean, if I launch "emerge @preserved-rebuild" and while it's running I launch another emerge... would it be possible that the preserved-rebuild set is somewhat reinitialized or something? I ask because at that time I was emerging concurrently many minor packages on two terminals. I did @preserved-rebuild a couple of times and it did not go away. The last time I did it, it was the only emerge process running, and it then did go away.

Of course, it could be all out of pure casualty, but maybe is there some problem with concurrent merges and that feature.

i´m not an expert, but i had this too and had no concurrent merges running iirc.
I just make sure that everything is fine with revdep-rebuild and if it is, i just delete the offending library and rebuild the package. The latter is probably not needed, but just to be sure.

cheers
