Resolution-Refresh problems with new monitor

  • Quote

Post by chris.c.hogan » Thu Jul 17, 2008 4:04 am

I just upgraded the monitor on my daughter's computer. Previously, she had a 14-inch CRT. It worked well. However, it was small and getting dark. I picked up a Dell P780 17-inch CRT, used, to replace it.

The first problem I encountered was the resolution. I couldn't get any resolution, other than 800x600, to work. I traced this down to broken EDID. It's blank. So I set the following under Device in xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

 Option "UseEDID" "FALSE"
That allowed me to set the normal resolutions (1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480).

The next problem I noticed was flicker. So I need to set my refresh higher. The only problem is that xrandr won't let me set it any higher. I did a Google search until I could find some timing information for this monitor. I added several Modeline commands to the Monitor section. Under the Screen section, using Modes, I listed the resolutions I wanted at the refresh desired. Still no luck. I now have several resolutions available. However, I can only use very poor refresh values.

The video card is old. However, it should be able to do 1024x768@72. I seem to recall it being able to do that when I had it in my computer. It has 64MB of memory.

Am I missing something? Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Try nv driver

Just for giggles, try to use the 'nv' driver instead of 'nvidia' in your card Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. See if that gets you anything.

Also, are the modelines matched up to output of running "gtf" (man gtf)?
