Installing GNOME

  • Quote

Post by lcaseyva » Sat Jul 12, 2008 12:54 pm

Hello,

So far I have never been able to install gnome. It always gets hung up at "Couldn't download 'zip231.tar.gz'. Aborting"

The only thing I would like to do now is download xorg-x11 and gnome files and emerge them from a local cd.

How can I tell emerge to emerge off of a cd?

Is there a single gnome or x-org tar file I can download, extract then emerge ?

Thanks

Larry

There isn't a single tar-ball for gnome or xorg, they're split into innumerable separate packages.

You can try fetching the files that you want using 'emerge -f'

You can't explicitly tell emerge to emerge from a CD, but if you have the source tar-balls for all of the packages on a CD then just copy them to /usr/portage/distfiles/ where everything is downloaded to.

Thanks,

Ok If I have all the files in the /usr/portage/distfiles/ directory how would I install them? I am willing to place them in that directory, but dont know how I would go about installing them.

Thanks

If all the source files you need for an emerge are in /usr/portage/distfiles/ then if you emerge whatever, portage will find them and do the emerge without downloading anything.

I've just had a look in my /usr/portage/distfiles and the version of zip I've got in there is zip232.tar.gz. Did you do an emerge --sync just before the emerge that bailed out with the failure to download zip?

One possibility is to run:
emerge --pretend --verbose --fetchonly zip
which will give you the exact name(s) of the source files(s) the package needs.
If you drop the "--pretend" from the command, it should then download the files
to /usr/portage/distfiles without installing the package; then drop the "--fetchonly"
and the package will be emerged from the local source.

If you do this once, step-by-step, you'll be able to see where the process is breaking
down. Once it's fixed, you can just run:
emerge --verbose gnome
and get the whole of gnome, though for some reason I usually emerge xorg-x11 first.

(Gnome takes ~12hrs to build on a 1GHz/512Mb/5400rpm PIII laptop).

Good luck - Will
