Prefix Bootstrap error on emerging portage

I was doing a copy/paste of this guide: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gentoo-al ... -macos.xml

Everything has gone smoothly until I got to:

emerge -u system

and got this error in the end:

While guessing that it was an empty make.conf that was probably causing the errors, I added the flags in and reran

emerge -u system

It has finished successfully. Is the emerge -u system step one step ahead in the guide?
