kdm 4.0.3 not working

  • Quote

Post by skyPhyr » Sat Apr 12, 2008 11:35 am

Hi All,

This is a fresh system, so it might not directly be kdm, but some other config
issue - though it is I can't find it. I can login than startx and kde 4.0.3 runs
perfectly.

I get these error in my /var/log/everything/current
Apr 12 12:07:22 [kdm] :0[5334]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter
Apr 12 12:07:22 [kdm] :0[5334]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 125, signal 0

Any ideas on the fix?

Cheers,

Alan.

Has anyone else got this issue? Might be able to figure out what's in common.

Cheers,

Alan.

I can confirm that it doesn't work on newly installed PPC64 system. I haven't tried 4.0.2 or any other systems

Using GDM starts KDE no problem

I'm on x86. Not a new install though, I have kdm+kdm 3.5 on that box and it works flawlessly.

Just to check I've read correctly - only have people who have it broken on systems without kde 3.5.X?

No, I have kde 3.5. It seems that whether you have kde 3.5 or not isn't the problem.

In "/etc/conf.d/xdm" do you have "DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm-4.0""

When I went from 3.5 to 4.0 I had that problem, kdm did not start although X would. I had gotten rid of 3.5 before I emerged 4.0.

oh - that was too hopeful. At least it tells me installing kde 3.5.x won't fix it.

In my conf.d/xdm I just have it set to kdm, not kdm-4.0 - will try with 4.0 and see what happens.

EDIT: Tried it - same error. d'oh. Also tried symlinking /usr/bin/kdm to the kde 4 one incase the
error meant not found. No change with that either.

Cheers,

Alan.

For those curious a recent emerge -uD world solved it. I could post a list of packages
updated if anyone's interested.

Just do a 'dbus-uuidgen --ensure' and try to restart xdm..
This work for me

same as
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-71 ... ected.html
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-68 ... ected.html

in both cases the users solved it in the windows fashion -- "maybe it'll just fix itself?" and it did.

but that seems like a rather suspect way of doing things.

essentially, from /var/log/messages:
Oct 28 22:30:35 bmy kdm: :0[15903]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter
Oct 28 22:30:35 bmy kdm: :0[15903]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 125, signal 0

but with the current time/date, and my computer's hostname.
HW problems. It's a VIA thing.
