Which Gentoo version help!

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Which Gentoo version help!

  • Quote

Post by marley666 » Sat May 10, 2008 11:22 pm

OK, so i decided to finally get away from Fedora Core dependancy and move to a 'better' (subsititute more rewarding) Linux platform and Gentoo appears to fit the bill nicely, my question is simply which version should I install?

I don't want to install the system, and then have to re-install over the coming months so should i stay away from the BETA 2 or is the BETA simply going to be gently merged into a 'working' system using live updates?

Any help is appreciated, cheers.

marley666,

The beta 2 is the version I would recommend. Just because it's in beta doesn't necessarily mean it's unstable. Regardless of which version you choose, you'll still have to update to the most current versions of software patches and fixes. The beta2 is the latest version with all of those important updates (up to the release of the beta) included.

Since virtually all updating to Gentoo is done through Portage (ie. updating over the internet), getting the most recent version will save you lots of time and trouble in getting the updates.

Once you install the beta2, you'll still be updating the fixes that were released after beta2 was released anyways.

All-in-all, the beta2 is really just a name for the testing phase. You'll still be getting all the working core components of a genuine Gentoo system.

Maliwik is right.

The 2007 version is very very outdated.

Go with 2008 beta 2.

Hi.

To expand a little on the comments by the previous posters, unlike Fedora, one doesn't update Gentoo when a new release is made. Instead, Gentoo can be updated every day as new packages are added to the tree or existing packages are updated. You might want to read this guide to understand better how to update a Gentoo system.
