[SOLVED] nvidia won't work anymore

Hi,

For a couple days I've been facing weird behavior with my X server (both trying TWM and KDE) and the nvidia drivers.

I've updated my system + added KDE4 (yeah I must admit) to my system. I went very OK ! It worked with Compiz and so on...

But after a couple days I stopped my KDE4 and got an error (KDE CrashHandler). The morning after I launched back my computer and found out a blank screen. After some inquiries I found that my X systems (twn, kde3, kde4 ) are wroking well with the nv driver.

I've compiled a new kernel and.. it worked again with nvidia this time !

A couple days after, new crash and same problem with nvidia again.

I've installed the brand new nvidia-drivers and, yeah, it worked again.

A couple days later, guess what ?, crashed again, yeah, you got it.

Now I can't get it working again

I've reinstalled the nvidia module, I've changed of kernel, I've reconfigured xorg .... I've stop using KDE4 since the first fix.

I can't see a relevant error message anywhere ... perhaps in my xorg.0.log but ... nothing great.

Symptoms are : xserver looks like starting , but the screen remains blank whatever the way I try to launch it (xdm script, kdm, startx ... ) only when using the nvidia-module of course.

I must admit I'm out of idea down here.
Anyone has an idea ?

My monitor is quite new. I've noticed in the Xorg.0.log it was talking about CRT although it is actually a flat screen. But I don't know if it's relevant.
It works perfectly with the nv module though (in 1280x1024 resolution and 32bit colors).

It used to work very well with nvidia though. And I could get my X server working again with installing a new kernel, then a new version of the nvidia pilot.
I mean, I don't think my monitor is broken, or about to break.

I couldn't get my X server back working after a shutdown of my machine. I.E. The following day, I had the problem when launching the computer again.

So a question is : while X/KDE/... is shutting down, is it possible that it leaves a session file somewhere that prevents it to launch next time. This file may be corrupted for some reason.

Well, I don't have any real clue of what's going on, it's really getting on my nerves when I don't know where to search into.

i really can't see a clear reason here, you could try to switch to the nvidia-glx-architecture again

and i suggest you recompile some other stuff (not only the nvidia-drivers) like xorg-server and the dependent libs. i tried kde4, too (for a very little while) and it brings some new stuff related to this, maybe sth got messed up.
if you have manually put in "optimizations" in the CFLAGS you could try to keep them more stable and conservative. also, kde4 is still BETA.

My CFLAGS are safeguard ones.

I believe you're right when you say I have corrupted something related to graphics (X server, whatever ... ) while I have emerged KDE4. But I'm not using it anymore, meaning that I had the crash with KDE3.5 as well.

So unfortunately again, it's not only about KDE4 core..

I believe KDE4 repalces coresponinding packages in KDE3. I don't think you can have parallel KDE3+KDE4 installation, at least not with portage tree installation.

Regarding corrupting lib or packages, try doing a revdep-build first, that will be much less guessing.

Also can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Well, I think it is actually possible to have kde35 and kde4 installed at the same time (thanks to slotting in portage tree). But I think it has messed up something in my system for some reason. But once again, it has worked a couple days before crashing, so it's not the installation in itself that didn't work.

LCD, especially new ones, and I believe you are using the digital cable since you have a 7600, don't need V and H refresh rate. DPMS will handle it.

as long as you don't have ARGB visual turn on, composite won't work...
try loading xorg with nv drivers and
-> xdpyinfo | grep -B1 dot
look out the values then set them in xorg.conf as
-> Option "DPI" "75 x 85"

sometimes useful informations can be grab just by asking X to get some...
try also X --configure and lookout what X have to say about your system in its own made xorg.conf

Thanks guys, but nothing of these worked for me.

But honestly I doubt there is something wrong in my xorg.conf file since I'm using it for almost a year now without any problem, and it has worked for a couple days after my update and before the crash.

Well, looks like I have a really strange issue down here.

I've tried again some things... Starting with smart ones (trying to look after any error messages ... )

But then I was very fed up with looking into the deep void. So I said to myself : "*¨^pe this ¨*¨*, I want some fun now.
So I plugged in my other crappy hard drive with Windows on in order to play a game I can't run on Gentoo. Well, fair enough.

(The story is : I had Windows installed on an IDE disk. Then I bought a SATA disk, I've installed Gentoo on my new drive, and kept Windows on the old disk, on a shelf. I use it sometimes to play games that are not working on Gentoo)

But, and now it is what gave me the hint, after Windows has been launched, the first thing that appeared on screen was the nvidia dual view wizard asking me for configuring dual screen. (My card is capable of dualview, so it has 2 DVI output)

"What the hell", was my actual reaction : "Why is windows asking me to setup dual screen as it has never asked for it before". But I've checked this a bit, and found out that the nvidia wizard recognizes 2 screen : a digital one (my actual screen) and an analogic one (which I don't have). So, according to my video card I have 2 screens. I've tried to unactivate this stupid dual view configuration, but even if my video card is using my real screen (digital output), it "thinks" that I have a second screen.

My wild guess was : "What if I restart my gentoo box then ?" (I have 2 gentoo boxes : 32 and 64 : completely separated)

So did I. Well, as usual, the booting is correct, no problem at all until kdm launches, then ... nothing but a blank screen (kdm doesn't show, as it needs an X server to run). And this with the nvidia module.
I tried with the nv module : great, it works fine (1280x1024)

So, I tried a thing : before launching an X Server with the nvidia module. I switched the plug of my screen into the second output of my video card.
Then, I hit enter, and X launched, working fine with hardware acceleration (I've tried an OpenGL Application). Yeah !

So, as a summary I have working on

I) first video card output :

- Bios
- Boot Loader
- Linux Console
- X Server with "nv" module
- MS Windows fully hardware accelerated (nvidia drivers)

II) my second video card output :

- X Server with "nvidia" module (OpenGL working, I tried a game)
- (And nothing else ! )

So the question is ... why the hell is this happening ?
And why the hell have I a "ghost" screen, analogic one, recognized by my video card ?

Is it possible that I have screwed up my hardware configuration (yeah, hardware, because It's happening on 2 different Linux boxes and on a old Windows one without any software link to each others) with some program ? I've never tried to do some dual view so it's nothing I've done in purpose, but still it has happened.

Is it possible that KDE4 tried to, for a reason or another ?, and left some crappy configuration on my card ?

I don't think either my video card or monitor is burned down, or it will be really strange a hardware failure, really. But now, I think everything is possible :p

Yes, the DRI option is for the DRI compliant graphics devices. Hence mostly ATI and Intel nowadays. nVidia is using is own way to accelerate graphics.
So, either nvidia has gone DRI compliant (which I really doubt) or this is irrelevant in my case.

But it is possible that the bios of your card is crap. Or the driver. Please open a bug report in the nvnews forum.

Yes, but once again.

Why has this happened all of a sudden ? It worked for about one year with my configuration.

The bios is crap ? I haven't change my bios card myself.
Driver is crap ? Well, on 3 completely different drivers on 3 different installations ( 2 gentoo's and one windows xp ) I really doubt it.

One of the outlet burned ? Nah, the first outlet works fine for X/nv and Windows, the second one works fine for X/nvidia.

It's, unfortunately, not as simple as this =/

A little off-topic, but I'm pretty sure you need I2C support enabled in your kernel for video drivers to get your monitor's EDID. Try enabling Firmware EDID under the framebuffer devices in your kernel sources. I have a framebuffer console set up on my laptop (ASUS G1S w\ GeForce 8600m GT, using vesafb and nvidia-drivers). Even if you do or don't use a console framebuffer, enabling that should help your drivers detect your monitor(s) better, and will automatically enable the required I2C stuff at the same time.

That way, X11 will autodetect whatever monitors you have plugged in. I have just this in my xorg.conf:

By the way... when you say your system crashes "a couple days later", is that a couple days of uptime? If so, check if the card is overheating or not.
