[Solved] Special characters like "á" or "õ&qu

Hi!

I use special characters a lot, since I'm Portuguese and our language uses them frequently, and lately I've been having a weird problem with them. When I type them in Java-based applications or in gnome-terminal a "?" appears instead of them, but they work perfectly on the command-line bash (like tty1/2/3...) and on other applications like firefox :-)

My config files look like this:

locale.gen:

Code: Select all

pt_PT ISO-8859-1
conf.d/keymaps

Code: Select all

# Use KEYMAP to specify the default console keymap. There is a complete tree
# of keymaps in /usr/share/keymaps to choose from.

KEYMAP="pt-latin1"

# Should we first load the 'windowkeys' console keymap? Most x86 users will
# say "yes" here. Note that non-x86 users should leave it as "no".

SET_WINDOWKEYS="yes"

# The maps to load for extended keyboards. Most users will leave this as is.

EXTENDED_KEYMAPS=""
#EXTENDED_KEYMAPS="backspace keypad euro"

# Tell dumpkeys(1) to interpret character action codes to be
# from the specified character set.
# This only matters if you set UNICODE="yes" in /etc/rc.conf.
# For a list of valid sets, run `dumpkeys --help`

DUMPKEYS_CHARSET=""
xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier  	"Keyboard0"
   Driver      	"kbd"
   Option	"XkbRules"	"xorg"
   Option	"XkbModel"	"asus-laptop"
   Option	"Xkblayout"	"pt"
EndSection
I remember having this problem a few months ago but I can't remember how I solved it and I have no ideas left..

Thanks

I guess the fonts used in the Gnome/Java applications do not support special characters.
Change them to a better font.

You may also want to follow these two guides to upgrade your system to UTF8 by the way.

The fonts didn't work as I previously had thought since I was using common fonts.

The UTF-8 guide helped! Thanks!

I followed the UTF-8 guide and now I have another problem.

If I type "locale", I get

Code: Select all

locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
LANG=pt.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="pt.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="pt.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="pt.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="pt.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="pt.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="pt.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="pt.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="pt.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="pt.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="pt.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="pt.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="pt.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
which is obviously wrong since I should get pt_PT.UTF-8.

All my configuration files seem ok...

/etc/locale.gen

Code: Select all

pt_PT.UTF-8 UTF-8
/etc/env.d/02locale

Code: Select all

LANG="pt_PT.UTF-8"
Why do I have to manually set my locale to pt_PT.UTF-8 everytime I boot?

PS. The root account seems OK :\

Thanks

Not quite sure if that will help you, but at first sight your syntax isn't correct for /etc/locale.gen.
It should be something like this :

pt_PT UTF-8

As I said, not sure if that changes anything in the first place...

Maybe there's something wrong with your .bashrc or your .Xinputrc?
