I use special characters a lot, since I'm Portuguese and our language uses them frequently, and lately I've been having a weird problem with them. When I type them in Java-based applications or in gnome-terminal a "?" appears instead of them, but they work perfectly on the command-line bash (like tty1/2/3...) and on other applications like firefox
