hal ( 0.5.9 ) memory leak

Greetings.

Twice now ( and recently ) I've had to restart hal ( /etc/init.d/hald restart ) on our DB server, because it grew to consume 200MB.

Hal is in use for automounting ( in gnome ). We have a nice collection of external IDE drives with USB2 connections, and we do a full backup onto one of these each night. I'm not sure what else hal might be doing, but as far as I know, this is it.

Any ideas?
David Hicks' plea. Was it:

a) I plead guilty, or
b) Please let me out of here and end the torture

My hald ate around 1,5GB last time I checked. CPU also was at 100%.

What should be downgraded to stop this?

Yeah. But I don' t think this is Gentoo-specific. I googled a little and found people with this problem on other distributions, too (e.g. Ubuntu).

Actually, installing and using HAL is recommended in the official Gentoo Gnome Howto...
