Installing themes in Gnome [Solved]

Hmm, sorry for a question which I guess is quite n00b...

I was thinking of changing theme in my gnome desktop environment so I did:

# emerge -av gnome-themes-extras metacity-themes

But, I cannot find any new themes in System->Preferences->Apperance after that.
What might I be overlooking?

Not sure about that one, but check out Gnome Look and try downloading and
installing one of their themes. If that doesn't work, we may need to see if there is something else wrong with your system.

Thanks for you support!

I downloaded the Aurora Steel theme to my Desktop and installed it by clicking on install etc in System->Preferences->Apperance.
It was then possible to apply the theme at once and it then popped up as a custom theme in the list of the other standard ones.
I re-named it to Aurora Steel, so now I at least have one more theme

Looking into /usr/share/themes there seems to be a lot of themes, but none of them are accessible through System->Preferences->Apperance, nor can I see the theme i just installed in that directory.

That's a very strange one. Just a silly question, but have you restarted Gnome since you've installed the
default Gnome themes ? You shouldn't need to, but that's the only thing I can think of....

Maybe I have misunderstood this with themes...
I was expecting that some new themes would show up on the "Theme" tab, but if I pick one standard theme and then press the customize button I will find quite some different combinations to choose from.
For example I can pick the Aurora Steel controls.
Maybe this is the way it should be?

Perhaps. I don't really play too much with my themes so I don't really know too much about it. Perhaps the have themes listed on the main page that are in fact a theme consisting of the GTK and metacity parts in one package (if that makes sense).

Anyway, glad you got it all working.

The themes you've listed are GTK themes. Don't know about gnome themes but you can change gtk themes by running

$ switch2

You then get a window where you can preview and change themes. You need to have gtk-theme-switch installed though.

# emerge gtk-theme-switch -av

Just select Install New theme and locate the files if you can't see them in the dropdown menu.
