The installer was unable to read the file "<unknown>". This error may be caused by problems with the media or drive at --for example, a scratched or dirty CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, hard drive corruption, or a networking problem while downloading the installer. (The data being read was "Repack-MPQ\Data#patch.MPQ\textures\BakedNpcTextures\b8b3335182f057b84703fe1c2dd087f2.blp", and the error code was 38.) If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (MPQFile::Read)

While this may or may not be an amd64 specific problem, I do know that my WoW discs install fine on vanilla 0.9.12 on my x86 box. However, since the x86 box lacks a good graphics card, I can't realistically run it there. Does anybody have any ideas about this problem?
Just for future reference, it turned out that disabling amd64's cool 'n quiet/powernow feature both in the kernel and bios fixed this problem.

Edit:

Fixed with http://rapidshare.de/files/17982434/wow ... .9.12.html

Will this work with the 0.9.13 ebuild of wine or is it fine to stick with 0.9.6?

Funny you should mention that - using the patch from the Gentoo Wiki, I was able to get 0.9.13 up and running just fine on AMD64. I need to update my directions me thinks. :-)

Anyway, here's the patch/URL: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_an ... ine_0.9.13

So here's what you'll do - directions taken from step#3:

3) Download this popular wine patch for WoW:

ftp://anch.org/pub/linux/wine/wow.patch

*Instead* of downloading this patch, just touch/edit the file in the overlay's 'files' directory and replace it with the patch from the link above.

Follow the rest of the instructions the same, of course, changing 0.9.6-r1 to 0.9.13-r1 when you go ahead and do the build.

Am I making sense I hope? Zap me a PM if you get stuck.

Cheers!

Thank you b1f30! That was too easy!

I just sym linked the WoW install that I copied off my NTFS drive into the wine directory and it works flawlessly!

Thank you very much!

Wine 0.9.15
WoW 1.11 (released today)

With OpenGL mode the game will attempt to load (it makes it past the character select screen), but it doesn't even get to draw the first frame of the world before it errors:

Code: Select all

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 144 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 1235
Current serial number in output stream: 1235
Any patches for this yet?

I just finished playing after a 5 hour session :D
The updater was killing my fullscreen (after it finished updating since it keeps asking me if i want to turn the background updater on or off), so I disabled it, restarted the game and all was good.

But now the crash when I enter a cave/indoor room when the mini-map is on happens again, and so far the only resolution for it (that I found) was to close the minimap when I enter a cave/room.

I'm on the latest wine (0.9.15) and I'm only using the targeting-fix patch.

Edit: Note that I'm playing in OpenGL mode, using the latest NVidia drivers that are in portage (~x86) and the latest stable Xorg and running the latest WoW patch (1.11.0 I believe).

Seems lots of people having trouble after the patch (me included). Wine 0.9.15, amd64. Crashing at the login screen.... I.e. login screen comes up as an empty window, then it crashes. Was all working fantastically before the WoW patch. Grr.

for what the wow wine forums say. you have to update to the latest wine with the patch the old ones give you flickering..
the new one do gives back the minimap problem that is why it crashes when you try to log in..
download
http://www.curse-gaming.com/en/wow/addo ... ohide.html
if you log off inside a house/instance then try to log in first from a windows computer and get out then loging from linux
this worked for me.

Not that I've currently got this working, but when I had the flickering map problem (on a different machine) I found that if I turned it off, and then managed to toggle one of the video option (vsync is a nice easy one) then the flickering would stop. Of course, it's not at all easy to do that (the flickering is very very for anyone that hasn't seen it). You still need to remember not to activate the minimap inside or it'll start flickering again.
Not _much_ help, but it beats changing computers just to walk outside! ;)

You didn't hear this from me but - WoW runs near flawlessly on my same old Gentoo AMD64 (32-bit) system with wine-0.9.20. Ssshhh! You never saw me here! *vanish*

I don't like to revive old threads or sound like a fanboi too much - but - WoW no longer needs 3rd party patches to work on Linux. I updated the original thread to let a few peoples know that WoW also runs flawlessly on Debian Stable!

And - AND - if you really wanna get nuts, tune into:

http://svn.wowace.com/wowace/

Pop open a terminal and start using subversion to grab some addons. Then, anytime you want to upgrade them:

cd <locationofaddons>
for i in * ; do svn up ; done

So nice.
