Portage listing

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Portage listing

I'm new to Gentoo and I'm running into some problems. I've managed to 'successfully' install Gentoo but somewhere along the line I've failed to emerge some necessary modules (at least that's my guess) because neither X nor my network connections work.

I think I know what's required of me now but I have no idea what package-name to specify after the emerge command so that I get the correct one. So, if someone could please tell me where I can find a listing of all the available packages so that I can browse through them and get this thing running. Thanks in advance.

without a network connection u will have problems to emerge something.
i guess u didn't read the installation manual.
read it carefully - and then if u have troubles - post it here

Ok, I guess I wasn't clear on this. I went through the entire install process, during which, I DID have a network connection and emerge worked fine (I emerged all the packages that were listed in the installation procedure). What happened though, since I didn't know which OTHER (my system specific) packages to emerge, I didn't do it at that time. Then, when i rebooted the system I had no X, no network, etc. So now, what I'd like to do is have a list of available packages so that next time I re-install the system I can emerge them while I have the network connection and hopefully it (network and X) will be back up when I reboot.

For X the minimum requirement is XFree86.

Code: Select all

emerge xfree86
If you want Gnome:

Code: Select all

emerge gnome
The needed dependencies will be installed automatically. Also if u want to install KDE type

Code: Select all

emerge kde
and then let it run!

For example if u type
emerge -p gnome
all packeges are listed, which will be installed.

If your network card worked during install, a good idea is to reboot with the install CD, and do an lsmod and see which kernel module the install CD auto-detected for your network card. Then chroot into your install as per the instructions and build that kernel module yourself (or build it into the kernel) so that you have it when you reboot. There's no need to redo the entire install from scratch or anything.

Ok, thanks. But how about my network connection and any other stuff I might need. Is there no listing of all those packages anywhere? Am I just supposed to know that I need 'xfree86'? I mean, this one might be common sense but what about other packages, how do I get their names?

Code: Select all

emerge -s xfree
for example will do a search for all packages with "xfree" in their names. The portage tree itself is in /usr/portage on your drive, you can browse it. Or browse it here: http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/index.xml Many of the common things you want to install have a nice how-to here http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/docs.xml#top , for example, it'll walk you through installing xfree and tell you all the packages you need.

It's a good idea to try this one:

Code: Select all

emerge --help
