Metacity Composite Effects

  • Quote

Post by Crispy Beef » Thu Nov 29, 2007 3:48 pm

Hi All,

I've just got composite effects working in metacity. :) Is there an easy way - or list of vars - that I can use to adjust the way the effects work at all. I've searched Google and the forums here but most results/threads deal with getting it up and running and not messing with the settings once it's all working.

Cheers,

Crispy

If I may ask, how did you get composite effects working with metacity? I'm running gnome 2.20 with ATI X600 on 2.6.23-r9 with ati-drivers 8.433 and metacity 2.20.2. I found some instructions to re-emerge metacity with xcomposite use flag, but that is not a supported use flag. I see at the bottom of the ebuild for metacity:

pkg_setup() {
G2CONF="${G2CONF}
$(use_enable xinerama)
--disable-compositor"
}

Does this mean if xinerama is specified in the USE flags, that composite is disabled? I do have xinerama enabled, but I don't think I need it since I'm running ATI big desktop. But if I look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I do see composite enabled.

[EDIT] I disabled the xinerama use flag for metacity and re-emerged it. Unfortunately, that still doesn't show any effects in Gnome. And now every time I open a window, it opens up on the wrong monitor :(

I've updated gconf to set the metacity composite boolean, and still I see nothing. Are there any simple things I can look for to see if composite is actually working or not? Thanks.

GNOME 2.22 will have the Metacity compositor available.

Ok, thanks. Having the windows open up on the wrong montor is much more of a bother than any special effects would be entertaining. So I'm going to re-enable Xinerama in metacity.

Hello,

I just installed gnome 2.22 yesterday after it became amd64 stable in portage, and I enabled compositing_manager for Metacity in the Configuration Editor, but I still do not get any nice transparency/shadow effects. Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks!

Ok, I found the fix. Apparently, because i'm using xorg-server-1.3.X, i need to add

Code: Select all

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "true"
EndSection
to my xorg.conf. Everything looks pretty now :D

As far as I know, you cannot modify how the effects work in 2.22. Maybe it will change in 2.24
