[SOLVED] USB-MIDI Masterkeyboard support?

  • Quote

Post by 82303 » Mon Feb 11, 2008 8:45 pm

Hello,

I'm planning on buying a USB-MIDI masterkeyboard to use it with the various softsynths available for Linux.
The masterkeyboard I want to buy is (as stated above) connectable via USB.

My question is if I have to be aware of anything other then compiling in USB-MIDI support into the kernel? Is every MIDI masterkeyboard supported?
Or do you have any sugestions on what keyboard to buy which has good linux support?

For anyone interrested, this is the keyboard -> http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/K ... -main.html
It's nothing special. I want to keep it simple.

Thx for your help.

Regards,
Stefan

Probably your device is supported, but to be sure, you could search around a bit if you find some comments about it.

Anyway, the biggest problem you probably will have to face is latency. Try to minimise it at any cost, otherwise you won't be able to hear the computer output in realtime. Note: This involves kernel tweaking, so you may want to inform yourself about that too maybe before you buy.

I do use it, no problems at all, just make sure you have support for usb-audio (ALSA) and you are in.

You will need jack and a midi synthetizer to play it tough.

I use qsynth with fluidsinth because its what gives me the best performances and audio quality.

Hi,

thx for the answers ... thats what I wanted to hear ;)

My kernel is low latency already since I'm using my linux box for spicing up my mixing sessions with samples produced/edited with rosegarden and ardur.

So I declare this as solved.

Cheers,
Stefan

Quick question... I'm considering tweaking my kernel for low latency as well. Do you know if this has a negative or positive impact on gaming performance? I'm a musician but I also like to game XD. I guess there's only one way to find out and I can always add another kernel to my boot options...
