Failed to create .keep [solved]

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Failed to create .keep [solved]

  • Quote

Post by ColeSlaw » Sun Feb 10, 2008 10:26 pm

No matter what file I try to emerge, I get an error along the lines of "Failed to create .keep" no matter what I try to emerge.

What do I do to fix this? What can I post to provide more information? I don't know where to start on this one.

Here's an example of when I try to emerge portage. Any other program gets me the same stuff.

Code: Select all

 *
 * ERROR: sys-apps/portage-2.1.3.19 failed.
 * Call stack:
 *                 ebuild.sh, line 1701:  Called dyn_install
 *                 ebuild.sh, line 1138:  Called qa_call 'src_install'
 *                 ebuild.sh, line   44:  Called src_install
 *   portage-2.1.3.19.ebuild, line  193:  Called keepdir '/etc/portage'
 *                 ebuild.sh, line  431:  Called die
 * The specific snippet of code:
 *                      touch "${D}${x}/.keep_${CATEGORY}_${PN}-${SLOT}" || \
 * die "Failed to create .keep in ${D}${x}"
 *  The die message:
 * Failed to create .keep in /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/portage-2.1.3.19/image//etc/portage
 *
 * If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
 * A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/portage-2.1.3.19/temp/build.log'.

Here's the output of emerge --info:

The problem is in sys-apps/portage itself.

I'm using the same version of portage as you.
As a workaround try backing up and replacing your /usr/lib64/portage/bin/ebuild.sh with mine.
Don't forget to

Code: Select all

# cd /usr/lib64/portage/bin
# chmod +x ebuild.sh
If that doesn't work, you would have to manually re-install portage -
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/d ... ortage.xml
Gentoo is the stick-shift of Linux.
You work it manually, it has somewhat better performance, but it's really for the fun of it.

You are a lifesaver! I wasn't able to use your file, but reinstalling portage from the link you provided did the trick! Thanks!

No problem.

By the way, I was wondering about your logo...do you work for IEEE?
I actually just graduated with my BSEE in December :P

Nope, I am a member though. Power society, so I have an excuse for not knowing much about computers :)

I like the emblem, cause it is a bit obscure. Congrats on graduating too!
