weird ... capset is a part of libcap, if I remember right ... maybe you should try to recompile it?

thanks. that trick for the mouse worked. I didn't have auto as my protocol before...it was "MouseManPlusPS/2"

Anyways, it worked and now the most important problem with the new kernel is solved...for me at least. :)

Huh! Could you post where you found this!!

I'm very much interested. I've added a Realtek 8139 because I couldn't find a working nvnet driver!

Also - I can only get the nvidia driver to work when ACPI is not in the kernel. :-(
I can't remember where I got it, I think I found it in the nvnews forums, but I can't find the thread I found it in. So I've uploaded the module to my earthlink FTP space http://home.earthlink.net/~paulsdead/nvnet.tar.gz

also did you try adding this to the kernel line in your lilo.conf/grub.conf, pci=noacpi pci=biosirq. I had a problem with the nvidia graphics drivers coming up with a black screen when starting X without those options, since the driver was looking for the card on IRQ 10.

You should flip the redirector (< instead of >) , or you'l overwrite your patch instead of applying it.

First, thanx for the modified driver. I'll try it tomorrow when I'm not so beat.

For me regarding nvidia drivers:

1. ACPI in kernel - no boot options - kdm doesn't come up. I get three black screens (apparently tries three times) then the CLI login. startx returns 'couldn't find valid screens' message.

2. ACPI in kernel - pci=noacpi in boot options - kdm came up. I logged on. My normal windows tried to open. System froze hard. There have been a number of reports of this in gentoo bugzilla (still unresolved).

3. Kernel with no ACPI - no boot options - kdm starts normally. Logging on starts normally.

The 'pci=biosirq' is new to me. I'll try scenario 2 again and add that option tonight.

Thanx for the advice!

It gives no kernel panic, it just "stops" and does nothing after the message "using antipacitory scheduling elevator" (not sure about second word :D) After that test1 gives out something about a disk-drive controller, I think... the notebook has an external USB floppy that is not plugged in, might this cause the problem?

Info:
Toshiba 5200-701, acpi-only, p4-m 1.9 GHz, gf4 mx 460, 512 MB DDR, 2x 40 GB (toshiba+IBM), no "experimental" stuff enabled in kernel-config.

I checked out the kernel mailing list, didn't find something similar...
Same here, got a kt7a, said acpi disaebled because bios was to old. Flashed my bios. And now hangs while booting. Funny thing is, i have a USB-mouse, but when i put in a PS/2-mouse it boots just fine 8O

I like the new kernel, seems to be running smooth on my machine.. one thing however..

ALSA.. how can i get it to save my dang settings! I don't have alsasound as a service because it complains about modules.. which I don't use anymore.. I just have it compiled in..

Every reboot I have to run

amixer set Master 100 unmute
amixer set PCM 100 unmute

Anyway to get this setup?

Any one here having the 2.6.x kernel on a smp machine running? I have big preformance issues. somehow my radeon card only gives me about 1000FPS max (with glxgears). with 2.4.x kernel I had about 2500! the whole responsiveness of the system is just so bad. any hints?

Did anybody try to get ati-drivers work with test4

I tried and got a kernel oops on X start and the screen went (and stayed) blank.

look this thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=73260

-----cut-------
IMPORTANT :
Currently only driver versions 2.9.13-r1 and above will work on 2.6 kernels.

Kernel test4 does not even boot here.
The boot process hangs at this line:

Code: Select all

mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
Any ideas? I used my old .config from test3 and i even created a new one, which did not help.

Putting pci=noacpi to my grub.conf helped me.

It's maybe an ACPI problem. Try adding "pci=noacpi" to the bootloader options.

I keep getting this on compile of 2.6. I assume I just need to add some other kernel setting or something but I can't figure out what.

CC drivers/block/elevator.o
CC drivers/block/ll_rw_blk.o
drivers/block/ll_rw_blk.c:1238: #error "You must have at least 1 I/O scheduler selected"
make[2]: *** [drivers/block/ll_rw_blk.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [drivers/block] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2

I have this same problem. Just after USB and before ALSA the init just hangs. (I get the PS2 mouse enabling) message and then it locks up.

When I disable ACPI this doesnt happen.

I know that in the previous beta kernels it was widely known not to expect your scroll wheel on your mouse to work.....has this been resolved, or does anyone know a work arund?

I only tried test3 and now test4. Mouse worked perfectly (with scroll enabled) in both. Mine is a Logitech MX500.
