Hi, I installed Gentoo on my DELL XPS M1330 laptop. I found my speaker doesn't work. But I can get sound from headphone.

The laptop uses snd-hda-intel sound card module. I got this when running `lspci -v | grep -i audio`:

Code: Select all

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
It works under 2.6.23-r4 gentoo-sources kernel. And I use ALSA provided by my kernel, the first method in the article Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide.

The result of `alsaconf` program seemed all right.

I've test the hardware under Ubuntu 7.10 and both speaker and headphone work perfectly.

I think I didn't mute the speaker. Here is a screenshot of the gnome-alsamixer: http://www.cnliufeng.com/sound.png

Does anybody have any suggestions for me? Thank you.

(I apologize if I speak English in a bad grammar :? )

Well, I found the output of `alsamixer` is a bit different than `gnome-alsamixer`. Here is the screenshot of the output of `alsamixer`:

By the way, in `gnome-alsamixer`, I found the PCM row controls my first headphone(There's two headphone line-out in my laptop). The Front row control the second one. Master control the whole system. No one can let the speaker speak... :(

See wiki regarding "modinfo". Use Google to see how other people get ALSA to work with your hardware.

Well, I'm not sure much people use a same laptop for Gentoo. Matt Manjos had wrote an article about it, http://linux.manjos.com/dell/. I've asked him about my problem by email but the problem still exists.

Hope the wiki page you gave me will help. I'll try it at once. Thank you. :)

Am I alone in being able to type "XPS M1330 alsa" into Google, and getting loads of hits?

How are you loading the snd-hda-intel driver ?
You are supposed to load it like this:

Code: Select all

modprobe snd_hda_intel model=5stack
Since there are so many different specifications for the intel hd audio chip, you have to specify the model. i used 5stack, and it worked for me...
Also check out the gentoo-wiki http://gentoo-wiki.com/Dell_XPS_M1330.

you could try another kernel:

helium-sources: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-47 ... ml#4761485 (nearly pure vanilla 2.6.24-rc*)
zen-sources: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-64 ... t-250.html, http://repo.or.cz/w/linux-2.6/zen-sources.git, http://www.zen-sources.org/ heavily patched & a rocket :D

Can you explain me how you manage to get the mic working?
I have the same computer, using last kernel sources (2.6.24) and I'm unable to have the internal mic working: everything else (speaker, headphone, external mic) is working fine.
Does anyone know what I can do ? (many ubuntu posts say that the internal mic is working, but everything I found is about kernel 2.6.22 so I guess it should have been integrated in the last kernel).

Thanks

Well, its' a shameful question

I've solved my question by using ideas of upper floors on kernel 2.6.24. Thank all of you so much!

But now I get the problem is I lost my setting of sound card after reboot. Every time I reboot my laptop, I have to run "sudo alsaconf" or else I can't get any sound.

Though it's not a big problem, it sucks when I run alsaconf by hand again and again.
