Intel 945GM: How to make X use the native resolution?

  • Quote

Post by dlaor » Sun Jan 27, 2008 7:30 pm

A week ago I installed Gentoo linux for the first time. Setting it up is a slow process, but now I have my sata drive recognised and my internet connection working. This weekend I have installed X.org. This went fine but now I seem to be unable to make use of the native resolution (1600x1200) of my monitor, an HP LP2065 which is connected via DVI to the onboard Intel 945GM graphics chipset. So far I cannot get X to use anything else than the initial mode 1024x768.

I have tried the following:

- Changed /etc/X11/xorg.conf as described in the Intel GMA Wiki. This did not change anything.

- Changed from using vesafb to using uvesafb in my kernel, and changing /boot/grub/grub.conf accordingly. Now the console is in 1600x1200 (which is very nice), but still X starts in 1024x768...

I have read about the "915resolution" fix, but a lot of people call it ugly and a hack, so I did not try that. I also read that the newest intel drivers don't need this fix anymore, is this true?

Below are my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log. I guess the problem will be the "bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan" errors or the "I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0" error, does anyone know how to fix these?

Thanks in advance, dlaor.

dlaor: yes, the intel-drivers of version 2.0 or newer don't need 915resolution any more. As xorg-server's autodetection capabilities have somewhat improved over the last years, first try a very minimal xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "intel"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "screen0"
    Device "intel"
EndSection
and add additional entries as needed. You probably won't need the "InputDevice" and "DRI" sections any more.
You can determine runtime support for different screen modi using

Code: Select all

xrandr
If this still doesn't give you 1600x2000, you'll probably want to add "Display" subsections or ModeLines (see Gentoo Xorg HowTo), but first you should try the simple method.

The same problem have made my headache for long time!
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-63 ... ight-.html
and I also tied to use 915resolution, it don't amend any issues.

I get the monitor parameter via the below command line,
and attach it to Monitor section of xorg.conf .

Code: Select all

 $ gtf 1440 900 60

  # 1440x900 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 55.92 kHz; pclk: 106.47 MHz
  Modeline "1440x900_60.00" 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync
ofter I entry gnome environment, change the screen resolution via
"System" --> "Screen Resolution"
select parameter to : resolution = 1440x900 , refresh = 60

Then the monitor will work in its native resolution!
good luck!

xorg.conf

Code: Select all

First of all, many thanks for your replies Voltago and robinswan.

Voltago: I tried your minimal xorg.conf. Sadly it did not work: resolution is still 1024x768 and the same errors appear in Xorg.0.log:

Code: Select all

(II) intel(0): Not using default mode "640x350" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)

... etc ...

(II) intel(0): Not using default mode "2048x1536" (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan)
Running xrandr gave

Code: Select all

Can't open display
Which is not good i guess :?. Note that my display is connected via DVI and that my motherboard also has an LVDS connector. Nothing is connected to the latter, but X thinks there is:

Code: Select all

(II) intel(0): Output LVDS connected
Is it possible that xrandr tries to open this device, eg the non-existing device that X thinks is connected to the LVDS connector?? Is there a way to specify the display xrandr should look for (for example can I specify it should probe the DVI port or something like that?)

robinswan: I looked at posts about your problem. I have tried the same things that were suggested (i.e. adding the 830/915 driver to the kernel, not as module and emerging the acpid application), but to no avail. However, your problem is interesting since it gives the same error (bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan). On the other hand in your case X starts with the initial mode 1440x900, were you able to specify this initial mode somewhere? My X always starts with initial mode 1024x768, no matter what i set in xorg.conf.

After you solved the problem, did the bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan-errors disappear from your Xorg.0.log?

And when you ran xrandr, did it give the "Can't open display"-error? And after you solved it?

I also tried the Modeline options, but they did not work (see my xorg.conf above).

I see now that only a part of the Xorg.0.log was posted, here is the remaining part:

The last errors "(EE) intel(0): I830 Vblank Pipe Setup Failed 0" happen after closing X, so i guess they do not matter?

I am also still only using twm for X, but this should not give a problem right? Or can twm not use high resolutions?

Hi, dlaor:

I all most confirm those issues is the bug of xorg.
now my X is so unstable no my monitor native resolution.
some time it work in 1440x900@60 and some time do not!

we just wait xorg amend itself.

The problem is now solved :D.

xrandr gave the error "Can't open display" because I executed it outside X. When executed inside X it showed the possible resolutions for the (non-existing) LVDS monitor and the real monitor. I could then change the resolution of the real monitor to 1600x1200 and this all works.

So somehow X finds two monitors, one connected to LVDS, with max resolution 1024x768, and one connected to DVI, with max resolution 1600x1200. I guess it clones the desktop for these two monitors and thus sets the resolution of the desktop to the minimum resolution of these two, which is 1024x768. To stop this you can tell X to ignore the LVDS monitor as follows:

xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
  Identifier	"Intel 945GM"
  Driver	"intel"
Option	"Monitor-TMDS-1" "HP LP2065" #assigns monitor section "HP LP2065" to the first DVI port
Option	"Monitor-LVDS" "LVDS Virtual Monitor" #assigns monitor section "LVDS Virtual Monitor" to the LVDS port
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier	"HP LP2065"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier	"LVDS Virtual Monitor"
Option	"Ignore" "True" # Tells X.org to ignore this monitor
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  Identifier	"Default Screen"
  Device	"Intel 945GM"
  Monitor	"HP LP2065"
  DefaultDepth	24
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth	24
    Modes	"1600x1200"
  EndSubSection
EndSection
You can replace "Monitor-TMDS-1" by "Monitor-VGA" if you want to assign a monitor section to your VGA-port. Some cards use "Monitor-DVI" instead of "Monitor-TMDS". Of course my second DVI-port is denoted by "Monitor-TMDS-2", etc... All these names can be found in your Xorg.0.log.

Hurray! Now I can finally install xfce :D.

Many thanks again to robinswan and voltago for helping me.

(robinswan: I looked at your Xorg.0.log but I don't think my solution can help you, since X only finds one monitor connected to your VGA-port and hence your resolution will not be reduced because of other (non-existing) monitors)
