3.x kdepim apps will still run on kde 4.0.0, right?
I believe you still need to have kdelibs 3.5.x installed for them to run, but yeah, they should work with no problems. :) They just won't use the fancy stuff. I also think you need to have the kde3support package installed if you are using split, unless that's in kdelibs. I forget where I seen it.

Cheers.
Nothing to read in this sig. Move along.

Unfortunately I have not reached this level,
because I have stuck on blocked packages.
I fully described it here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-647942.html
I will appreciate every your suggestions.

I am getting an error with kdeartwork-meta:

Is kdeartwork-colorschemes corrupt? How can i rectify this?

Thanks to the devs!

I installed KDE 4 overnight and all of the ebuilds compiled fine. (I installed using emerge -av kdebase-meta after unmasking kde4 as described earlier in this post with autounmask) I must say thanks again to everyone who managed to get KDE 4 into portage.

So my impressions and issues so far:
  • It's fast! Noticeably faster than KDE 3.5.8
  • The oxygen theme looks very professional
  • I am having problems with getting the usual KDE applications in the menu - for example the education applications are missing - do I need to install something else?
  • I dont seem to be able get the OpenGL effects going - does anyone who has an NVIDIA card have what they put in their xorg.conf? and did you put "export KWIN_NVIDIA_HACK=1" somewhere? (I read that somewhere)
Thanks again!

I believe the kde-meta package is only the basic kde environment, for artwork, games, etc, that's additional meta packages. Check out /usr/portage/kde-base/ and look for anything with a -meta at the end.

I also got KDE 4.0.0 installed, and it's...different. Nothing I've noticed that is earth shattering, but I haven't used it much.

The "Blur" advanced feature broke something on my computer, I had to erase me .kde4.0 file to get that fixed. Not a big deal because nothing important was there...but still odd. Haven't tried using Blur again yet.

Is there an "Administrator Mode" for the System Settings panels? In KDE 3.5 you could switch to Admin mode to adjust system wide settings, KDE 4.0 does not seem to have that functionality, unless I missed it. Not a huge deal, just curious if I'm blind or if that's getting added in later.

There's more playing that needs to be done and trying to use KDE 4.0 exclusively for a few days to see if I get used to it. It's definitely different, but I can see how it could be really nice by the time it gets to 4.1.

Emerging 'kdebase-meta' is sufficient to have KDE4?
If yes, it will solve my actual problems with emerging kdebase.

EDIT:
Does it contain Plasma for example?

I *think* kde-base/kdebase-meta-4.0.0 contains everything 100% necessary for KDE 4.0.0. Other packages, such as kde-base/kdegames-meta-4.0.0, will contain all of the games for KDE (which is actually a horrible example because I don't believe any of the games have had any major updates from KDE 3.5). You don't need games for KDE to be complete...but what's a computer without solitare ?

Plasma is an integral part of KDE4, so kdebase-meta should contain it.

Thanks - I'm emerging the rest (all of kde-meta) at the moment. Hopefully that will fix my problems with the opengl stuff as well - I'll let everyone know...

When you say "totally no icons" - do you mean that there are no icons on your desktop? or in the start menu?

If you mean on your desktop then as far as I can tell there are just no default icons on the desktop - see some of the screenshots on this lifehacker kde4 review:

I mean icons on desktop, menu, file manager etc. Btw i have kde-menu-icons and kdeartwork installed. Oh, and I find in logs this:

Code: Select all

QPainter::begin: Cannot paint on a null pixmap
Is it something wrong with qt?

I don't believe any of the games have had any major updates from KDE 3.5
Check it out, games were reworked to svg, so they are really nice.

That certainly added in all the missing applications - except I still seem to have Amarok 1.4....

My main problem is that I don't seem to be able to get the desktop effects to work - could someone let me know which options and modules that they use for an nvidia card?

Thanks in advance....

I just got kde4.0 emerged and was messing around with the desktop effects. I turned on invert the colors and it broke. Now whenever I log in the bar containing the new menu, pager, taskbar, and clock doesn't show up. Anyone know how I can get that back?

Amarok 2 isn't finished yet, they don't have releases scheduled with the rest of the KDE team.

Thanks.... Also, my problem with desktop effects was that I needed to select the opengl driver using "eselect opengl set nvidia". This all looks great.

So I tried to emerge kdebase-meta,
but i got an error from 'strigi-0.5.7':

Code: Select all

 ERROR: app-misc/strigi-0.5.7 failed.

 *  The die message:
 * x11-libs/qt-4.4.0_rc1 does not actually support the dbus USE flag!
Removing 'dbus' flag has take no effect.
Is there any possibility to avoid this error?
Because I am stuck at the moment, and I cannot emerge further packages.
Please help.

I compiled KDE4 two days ago as well, and so far like it. Even the desktop effects worked, when I tried them for a little while.
But there's one thing that quite annoys me - konsole is EXTREMELY slow, switching from tab to tab takes more than 1 second, fast scrolling is impossible and if I minimize it, it takes the same amount of time to redraw the part of the screen that was below konsole. When I was playing around I noticed, that it was only this extreme when I was using a bitmap font (terminus) - when I used DejaVu Sans Mono, it was noticably faster, but still not perfect.
The thing is, shouldn't the bitmap fonts be the faster ones as they don't need font smoothing? 8O
There are no dumb questions, just dumb answers. So please help users that are new to linux/gentoo by answering unanswered questions.

qt-4.4 won't be supported until kde 4.1 so you have to build with qt-4.3.x right now.

There's still no administrator mode in the system settings as far as I can see, or am I missing something. Want to change my kdm theme.

Hello,

Installed kde-4... Have some issues, did not find a solution anywhere... Here are my first 10 points...

1. Have someone got kmilo running? In 3.5 it had configuration panels at kcontrol, now I cannot find it anywhere... I can see that the service is installed and running, but strace of kded shows no activity. I emerged kcontrol which is a separate package now, and still no clue...

2. The task bar is too large... In the old version I could do kcontrol->Desktop->Panels->Size->Tiny to reduce the size... Now I cannot find an option to do this.

3. At kde-3.5 I could open the k menu using <Alt><F1>, this does not work anymore... Any alternative shortcuts? (<Alt><F2> works as expected)

4. The battery applet/widget shows that my computer always connected to power cord... Any idea why?

5. The esound interface produce some "click" noise whenever it starts play sound... Could not find any useful configuration option.

6. dcop is not available anymore, I understand that dbus is somewhat better... But how can I access the runtimes objects from the command-line without writing dbus application? For example, how can I do: dcop kmix Mixer0 masterVolume

7. <Alt><Tab> stops working from time to time... I've found that I am not the only one... Is there a patch for this?

8. What happened to kde-base/konq-plugins (change proxy, javascript settings)

9. What happened to kde-i18n? I did not see any package accept LINGUAS.

10. What happened to the print to fie (PDF)?

Thanks!
