Just recently I reinstalled my system from a 2007.0 CD and forgot to link /etc/make.profile to the desktop profile, which meant lots of reinstalling with correct USE flags necessary for me - that was when I thought: Why doesn't Gentoo have an own desktop stage tarball?
A desktop stage could have some default software in it, like an X server, multimedia libraries, hal/dbus, gtk+/qt, ALSA, maybe even Firefox - thinking about the lots of people using alternative WMs including KDE/GNOME may not be a wise choice, because many people simply don't need it.
The same could go for a server stage: Including samba, apache2, php etc. would make the creation of a server much easier.
What do you think about this?
P.S.: If a dev sees this, I would like to say that I could work out a more detailed concept of this and maybe realize it when just being given some guidance with stuff like Catalyst. Also, would #gentoo-dev be a good place for discussing this?
