Cannot start X with a .xinitrc file

Post by cca93014 » Tue Aug 19, 2003 5:48 am

Hi,

I just installed gnome and uninstalled fluxbox. For some reason I cannot start X if I have a ~/.xinitrc file in my home directory. Even if the file is completely blank, X fails to start up.

I am starting X with the "startx" command.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm stumped...

Did you chmod it?

ie.

Code: Select all

$ chmod 700 .xinitrc
warning: `class GroveImpl' only defines a private destructor and has no friends.

read the logs and/or make sure it is a valid bash script

Read the logs in /var/log/Xfree86.0

Also, are you sure your .xinitrc file is a valid bash script? You said it would not work if the file was completely blank. It has to be executable and have the 'shebang' as the first line.

Code: Select all

chmod +x .xinitrc
Sample .xinitrc

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
xterm
exec fluxbox

Durr! That fixed it. Thanks very much!
