Using dvd::rip and dvdstyler

  • Quote

Post by schiotz » Thu Dec 27, 2007 2:05 pm

Hi!

I am trying to copy my daughters Postman Pat DVD (she is just old enough to put it into the player herself, so it won't survive for long) :)
It is copy-protected, so I cannot make a normal copy, but I can rip it with dvdrip. That also has the advantage that I can choose the right language for the audio once and for all.

Now I try to use dvdstyler to write the .vob files out on a DVD again. But I get an error processing the files (attached below). Presumably, I need to transcode them, so I tried to use dvdrip for that. But if I transcode as .avi files (xvid encoding), dvdstyler will not recognize the files, and if I transcode to .mpg files, I can choose between a few encodings that seem to be for VCDs only: SVCD, VCD, XVCD, XSVCD and CVD. I tried SVCD, but my DVD player could not play the resulting DVD.

I am probably doing something stupid, but I know way too little about how dvds work to figure it out myself, so any help is appreciated!

Best regards

Jakob

I'm not clear about what your are doing to make dvdstyler fail, but to make this clear:

1. there is no need to transcode video when copying a Video-DVD to Video-DVD, unless you don't have enough space on your target-medium.

2. dvdstyler needs an mpg-file ready to use for dvdauthor (or an ps stream an the audio stream in separate files - then dvdstyler will use mplex to produce the needed mpg-file).

k9copy?

Hi!

If you are using KDE or if you use GNOME and already use some KDE applications: have you tried k9copy yet?

Code: Select all

emerge app-cdr/k9copy
This should be easier if you really want to copy DVD to DVD.

Andreas.
