xscreensaver app doesnt grab screen

After emerging xscreensaver and setting it up for random choices from a list of available screensavers I've noticed that certain ones don't work as they should. The screensavers that do not work are the ones that take a copy of the background and then perform some operations on them for cool effects. I've seen them work just fine on my slackware box but for some reason on my gentoo box the xscreensaver app doesn't do this.

Is there some kind of flag that I should be using to make this work?

Hi

You don't say which window manager you are using so the easiest way to fix your problem is to open an xterm and run xscreensaver-demo. Click on the Advanced tab and check the box for "Grab Desktop Images" on the Image Maniplation pane (this is the top left pane on the advanced tab).
