USB devices only usable as root (PAM "upgrade", udev?)

Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

I am no longer able to use USB devices such as my scanner and my camera as a normal user (works as root, but I would like to not have to run digikam and kooka and such as root).

The user is a member of the plugdev and usb groups.

I noticed this problem after "upgrading" to sys-libs/pam-0.99.9.0 (but I'm not sure that's what causes the problem).

How am I supposed to give a normal user permission to use USB devices these days / what could be the cause of USB being utterly broken if being a member of the "usb" group is still the correct way to give a normal user access to USB devices?

did you carefully follow the directions about the
pam upgrade at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/pam/upgrade-0.99.xml?
.... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth
doing as simply messing about with Linux ...
(apologies to Kenneth Graeme)

Yes. I do find it a bit strange that there is no mention of how permissions are actually set they used by be set by console.perms in previous versions, though.

I have no idea if not being able to use USB as non-root is because of pam or something else.

can you manually set the permissions of the relevant /dev files
to get it working for users other than root? If so, a stop gap
is to put that into local.start

still smells like a pam problem to me; if you feel indulgent you
might re-emerge pam once again :)
