I think fileshack might have a server program for ET..
I'd check but I don't have access to certain websites at work on government computers :(

Yup, if you have a WM on the machine that you want to use as the server then simply run the game as normal, click on "Host game" and use the dedicated server option to run the game.

If you don't have a WM you can do the following:

cd /opt/enemy-territory
nano ./etmain/server.cfg
* SET SERVER OPTIONS *
./etded.x86

[UK/G2]3uphoria as 'UK/Gentoo' takes up too much space. I have a good ping for most UK servers but BYGAMES and JOLT are favourites!

A Gentoo clan - w00t! I could spend all day in the forums; there are so many interesting topics and I've only just found this one!

I like the idea of a webpage just to have a place called home and maybe formalise matches and publish server details. I have 1024/256 cable and would happily host a game for a few of us to play...

I'll join #gentoo-clan on freenode later today and hopefully we can get it on. I play as covert ops and am a diamond sniper :P

See you there!

I was under the impression that there's no real -official- clan..as I've seen it it's moreso just a convenient naming convention for Gentoo ET players to find each other :> Could be interesting if it turns into one, so long as the process of joining doesn't become elitist or cumbersome along the way ;>

I would support a 'Clan', but nothing too intense. As for the Clan requirements, I imagine that if you've managed to perform a Gentoo install, that should be enough. :)

Not everyone runs Gentoo as a desktop, some folks dual boot to Windows and play ET there... I don't know about you, but personally I would imagine that everyone with a genuine interest in Gentoo is welcome! (Although we could certainly encourage folks to play from their very own Gentoo desktop box...)

After all, the point of playing games is to have fun, and I don't need to be elitist to have fun.

Thoughts?

Excellent, I hate these clans that take themselves too seriously after all it's just a game and you hit the nail on the head. I think that we should also try to help newcomers to the game (ie Me a week ago :) ) as we all have to start somewhere!

Sounds great to me. Personally, I'd be sad to see it move beyond being a clever branding strategy ;> A lot of the clans out there aren't very accessible, and sometimes entirely unfriendly to new people who wish to join..I think it'd be perfect if the requirements never got much more complicated than altering your name, otherwise the fun and the convenience are lost..well, in my opinion anyway.

I look at it more as way to show ET players that people have successfully installed and are actively playing the game on a Linux distro. AND KICKING THEIR BUTTS!!!

It might get some interest stirred up with those gamers out there.

lol.

And I don't like this G2 idea :P . It will completely eliminate the advantage of letting people know what you can play this game on linux :P . Most people don't care what your clan name is, but if it says gentoo...they will think gentoo linux. If it says G2, they will think 'what the hell?' :D

I agree. I think a good shortening might be [Gentoo], but I think it makes sense to include the full Gentoo name. Even though this might shorten it a bit in the tab-screen (which shows scores), your full name is represented in the HUD display and in the server messages. When you frag someone, they still know who it was...

I don't want anyone thinking I am playing on a really outdated Apple processor. (Get it? G2?)

Y'know, I'm sitting next to G2 computer right now... call it outdated again and I'll wash your mouth out. :) (BTW, I'm VERY joking...)

Actually, it was updated to a G3 years ago... and even that's getting slow. It still has MacOS 9 (it's one of the clones, and MacOS X doesn't work with it), but I've been thinking of installing Gentoo... if I could only get it to boot reliably (SCSI problems).

changing to [US/Gen2]KiNKyWaLa.
I'm a regular on the [ND80]Blue Gold server (26 player, 10 map campaign, running shrub).
I love the sub 25ms pings I get on all of the ND80 servers. 8)
