fluxbox, idesk, and fbdesk headaches

  • Quote

Post by paulisdead » Sun Aug 10, 2003 8:20 pm

I can't seem to figure out how to get menu transparency in fluxbox. I emerged fluxbox-0.1.14-r1, and there's no transparency option in the menu under configure.

I've also tried emerging idesk 0.5.5 and 0.5.6, and neither installs an executable, it seems. There's no idesk anywhere.

So I figured I'd try fbdesk, and I get this error when compiling

Code: Select all

XftFontImp.hh:28:25: X11/Xft/Xft.h: No such file or directory
In file included from Font.cc:34:
XftFontImp.hh:43: syntax error before `*' token

   const':

XftFontImp.hh:39: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each
   function it appears in.)

make: *** [all] Error 2

!!! ERROR: x11-misc/fbdesk-1.1.2 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 22, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)
I think that's all that's relevant, but I can post more of the build process if anyone thinks it'll help.

I'm trying to get the hang of fluxbox, but if I can't get it setup nicely I'll go back to xfce4.

*edit*BTW, here's the cflags I've tried
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -mmmx -msse -mfpmath=sse -m3dnow -fpic"

CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe"

CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe"

CFLAGS="-march=i386 -O1 -pipe"

and here's what portage installs when I do an emerge idesk

Code: Select all

>>> Merging x11-misc/idesk-0.5.6 to /
--- /usr/
--- /usr/bin/
--- /usr/share/
--- /usr/share/doc/
--- /usr/share/doc/idesk-0.5.6/
>>> /usr/share/doc/idesk-0.5.6/README.gz
--- /usr/share/man/
--- /usr/share/man/man1/
>>> /usr/share/man/man1/idesk.1.gz
--- /usr/share/man/man5/
>>> /usr/share/man/man5/ideskrc.5.gz
It installs manpages and readmes, but no executables, cute, eh?

I think that menu transparency is only available in the developer version 0.9.4
I'm couldn't be bothered to find out how to install it though. If someone can tell us, it would be nice ;)

Just copy the 0.9.3 ebuild and rename it to 0.9.4 and it should work.

Well if the emerge works correctly idesk will be installed in "/usr/bin/idesk", I don't know why it wouldn't get installed but still end succesfully.

Don't know why either, but it wasn't. "find /usr -iname idesk" returns only the idesk folder in portage. It installs the man pages and stuff, just no executable.

I figured out that it was the devel version and renamed it to 0.9.4 right after I posted this, before I went to work, so I got that straightened out.

Try deleting the idesk ebuilds from /usr/portage, rsyncing, and remerging idesk.

I finally got idesk to install. I modified the xft ebuild, so it'd install with xfree86--4.3.0-r3 (since that's what I had), then installed xft, then installed idesk. Works fine so far.

Ahh, but xft is already inside of Xfree 4.3, that is why Xft is blocked. If you have 4.3 installed you don't need to have Xft emerged.

For some reason it would seem that idesk needs the old seperate xft libraries, at least for me, to compile correctly. Idesk is working fine even after I unmerged xft. All I did was modify the ebuild so it wouldn't be blocked with my version of X, emerged xft, then idesk, then unmerged xft just to see what would happen. Works good so far.
