WoW white characters indoors/instance. [SOLVED]

  • Quote

Post by iphands » Thu Nov 22, 2007 3:53 pm

I have been playing wow on gentoo, and building/installing/using svn wine for a while....

Intel card:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

When the latest wine went stable 0.9.49 I upgraded, along with the 2.3.0 WoW update.

I had had a problem long ago where going indoors would cause characters would turn bright white (with no textures), but I had fixed it somehow (either with a config.wtf or telling X11 my cards capibilities as far as ram (VideoRam 256000). Since the WoW upgrade hosed my old config.wtf I can not tell if it was a problem with wine or WoW (downgrading wine did not fix the issue though).

Again it had been like this before, but I fixed it. Now that it has reverted I don't quite remember what I did to fix it.

Preemptive Thanks,
-Ian

btw I have screenies if anyone wants to see them.

edit: This happens when using both the directx and opengl wine implementations.

I am seeing the same issue with wine 0.9.50.... I know there is a fix for this somewhere (I remember doing something to fix it long ago).

Thanks for the help,
-Ian

This problem tends to happen when the video card runs out of RAM. If you're running a compositing WM you may want to try disabling it and seeing how that goes.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
(2 x 1GB) DDR2 800

Good call I believe I had fixed it before by "ensuring" X that I had 256mb of ram.

Code: Select all

        VideoRam    256000
It seems that X is still detecting enough Vram.

Code: Select all

(II) intel(0): [drm] framebuffer mapped by ddx driver
(**) intel(0): VideoRam: 262144 KB
(**) intel(0): Framebuffer compression enabled
(II) intel(0): 0x00020000-0x0061ffff: compressed frame buffer (6144 kB, 0x000000003f820000 physical
I also have these settings in user.reg

Code: Select all

[Software\\Wine\\OpenGL] 1197730869
"DisabledExtensions"="GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object"
"VideoMemorySize"="200"

[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] 1197775965
"PixelShaderMode"="enabled"
"VertexShaderMode"="hardware"
"VideoMemorySize"="200"
So why would something that worked for months finally give out after a WoW upgrade? Did they change that much?
Anyone know what gives?

Thanks again Neo & everyone,
-Ian

Solved

Done and done.I solved this a few minutes after filling a wine bug (I hate it when I find the fix right after opening a report).

It seems that there is a valid bug somewhere (in wine or i810 driver I don't know) that causes errors when "Enable Character Shadows" is unchecked. I would never imagine removing these simple textures would cause such an issue; but re-enabling them has solved the white textures bug for me.

Hope this helps someone somewhere.

P.S. Does any one else have the particular mobile video card? Do you also know it to JUST SUCK? Ever tried playing Quake2 with OpenGL rendering? It is horrible...... Some more graphically demanding games work without a hitch (no abundance of horsepower but they play well), while others fail miserably (i.e. extremely slow (<2 fps) and glitchy frames). Is this common knowledge or is my situation unique?

Can I ask you how many FPS you have in WoW? On my i945GM it's pretty good in menus/caverns/houses/dungeons, but when you run outside it renders roughly 5-8fps and never more (practically unplayable :( ).

I also have one more problem, I can't run the game with -opengl, because it throws an error and refuses to run, with exactly the same message as described here:

http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11131

...so I run it with -directx, because the error just doesn't trigger. Is there any fix for that? Could you provide your i810 kernel driver, mesa and xf86-video-i810 versions? (cuz someone told me that it runs far better with -opengl, so I really want that one fixed...)

btw, big thanks for solving those white textures, it was just _extremely_ annoying...

I also have an 945GM, with wine without pixel shader support. Outside, it's running about 8-13 FPS ( :( ) using -opengl option and the same FPS as yours using directx.
xf86-video-i810-2.2.1
mesa-7.0.2
2.6.23-gentoo-r5

also, it could be a Config.wtf problem. Check
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_an ... _with_wine
for further info. (try set M2UseShaders "0" and stuff)
