A default Gentoo install is broken right now due to expat being changed in such a way that you have to revdep rebuild after the initial install. So basically they're shipping a broken distribution, but also providing the tools to fix it.

It's still unacceptable.

yer as stated above.
its a PITA, but it can be fixed

hotplug isn't needed anymore (damb you have been away from gentoo a while).
its cause expat had a major version bump that breaks its compatability with everything built against it. The tarball that you would download still functions BUT the moment you do an emerge --sync && emerge system this new update to expat will be installed breaking alot of apps.

if you stick to the system build and sort out expat issues you should be ok, its once you start installing your own apps and lots of linkage occurs that major headaches occur.

If I understand in this moment there's no way to do fresh install of Gentoo? Blah... Sometimes think it will be good move to assiociate someone to monthly build of stage tarballs - or (if not monthly) at last whenever there's some major bug...

Then you seriously misunderstand. There's nothing stopping you (or me) from using the 2007.0 tarball, syncing the new install, doing a world update and dealing with the few hurdles (such as expat) that will occur.

The only reason I started this thread (or, at least, one of the two that have been merged) was because if 2007.1 was imminent I was going to put off a new install until it was released. Since it's been confirmed that there will be a 2007.1 release, then it must be imminent because there's only 5-6 weeks left in the year :) - and I'm happy to wait for that.

I was talking about that - is this mean that when I install from base tarrball and do emerge system then my system will crash? For me it's not very big problem, but potential user could lost all his enthusiasm seeing that...
Other thing is that I'm waiting for KDE4 release(11.XI?) - and hope that new tarrball will show at last the some day because I want to do fresh install on my new machine;)

Dealing with upgrading to expat2 was - um - fun :? , but I didn't find it as catastrophic as Naib seems to be implying.

I didn't say it would crash, just if not dealt with early in the install it can cause issues later on.
yr machine won't crash, it won't blow up, it won't suddenly download Vista-SP1 and install itself it will however be a right pain in the arse (but fairly easily fixable), to much of a hassle for some however

Hence why I recomended for a fresh install (untill fresh tarballs exist) sort out the problem straight away

Relax sweetie, i made 2 gentoo instals for the last 2 months and it was absolutely flawless (even without any expat problems - god forbid )

So what's the quick fix then? Sync, emerge system and then revdep rebuild?

A quick fix? In Gentoo? You, sir (or madam?), are an optimist, and I salute you for it. :)

If you're referring to expat, the clue is in the elogs. You do read the elogs, don't you? For expat-2.0.1:
WARN: postinst
Please note that the soname of the library changed!
If you are upgrading from a previous version you need
to fix dynamic linking inconsistencies by executing:
revdep-rebuild -X --library libexpat.so.0
And this thread gives more. All you need is in the first post. Once I got to my third box, I'd got it down to a fine art. As far as I remember, it went something like:

emerge --sync
emerge - Du world
emerge falls over some where along the line
revdep-rebuild -X
revdep-rebuild falls over somewhere along the line
emerge -1 gettext XML-Parser
Have lunch
revdep-rebuild -X
emerge -Du world
Have supper
revdep-rebuild (just to be sure  )
Go to bed, exhausted.

Well, thank you, I may have sweetened the gentoo memories, haven't used it for 2 years or so :) Getting ready to install it again in the very near future. Gotta have the to the point recipes ready for "the issues" :P The rest of your post pretty much told me what I needed to know though, so thanks :)

I've done several new installs since the new libexpat and not had any issues - even when I forget to upgrade it the nice way.

You can avoid libexpat issues totally (in my experience) by using the following upgrade path:
emerge --sync
emerge -1 expat
revdep-rebuild -X
emerge -uDNvat world

Thanks - that makes a lot of sense for a new install. I'll use that when I get round to building my new machine and doing a new install, if 2007.1 hasn't been released first. :P My recipe, of course, was for an old install.

But you've left a bit out (as the actress said to the bishop). You'll need to:

emerge -1 gentoolkit

before you revdep-rebuild. Which brings me back to the question I posed, but which wasn't answered, earlier in this thread: Why isn't gentoolkit included as part of the base system? OK, I know it's easy enough to emerge it, but it is an essential bit of kit and its absence threw me for a time when I was new to Gentoo.

I'm after fresh install from 2007.0 and there's no problem with expat on amd64 - or I have a lot of luck... Another reason may be that I build it from stage1 (eg. bootstraped and emerge -e system)
Revdep-rebuild done clear, and now question - now there's no problem but could it be that in near future it shows?

imanel,

Since you did a stage 1, you will not see the expat problem. The old expat was never installed on your system.
However, its in the stage 3 tarball, which is what causes the problem with new stage 3 installs

Stage 1 are for hardcore Gentooistes and also, this thing take a long time to process...maybe not today with the dual or quad core but in 2004 or in 2005...that was the case :)

imanel,

Stage 3 and fix expat as early as you can will be faster than a stage 1 as there is much less compiling to do.

Stage 1 is not without its pitfalls but its a wonderful educational experiance.
It adds very little to nothing to the installed system.

I couldn't be the only one that noticed the 'Nov/Dec 2007' release date on the Release Engineering page...

I respect the developers in their decision to release 2007.1 whenever. If it's not ready, it's not ready.
