Win4lin how to?

  • Quote

Post by phunni » Wed Jul 30, 2003 4:38 pm

I've been thinking about giving win4lin a go - I have some questions:

1) if I emerge it do I get a trial period or anything like that?

2) I notice that the sources for the win4lin kernel are part of the dependencies. Does the kernel thing sort itself out or do I have to configure that myself? I don't really mind doing it myself, but it would be nice if it was automatic. How does the whole kernel thing work? I guess I get a new kernel image - I'd rather hang on to my current one untampered with if I can.

Any thought, suggestions etc...

Looking at the ebuild, a 15 days trial license is included.

Yes, you will have to configure your kernel (just make a copy of your .config file from /usr/src/linux/.config to /usr/src/ and then copy it back to the new kernel, then check if any win4lin options needs to be reactivated.

The process is quite easy.

But what refrains me from installing it is this kernel thing. You can't use another kernel and the latest kernels are not supported yet (2.6).

Anyway, I'd like to try this win4lin, but not before they release modules as vmware do. Its much easier. Geez !! imagine, you have to install another kernel to get some software running ?!?

you may also use the gs sources which offer more features than the stock win4lin kernel. i'm successfully using gs sources 2.4.22-pre2 with win4lin. performance of windows applications is quite good and i really like win4lin. give it a try, i would say it's worth the trouble.

Where do you get the patches for the gentoo-sources kernel?

Jowilly: I agree that they should use modules. It's soooo much easier and it would be less "intrusive" into my system core

It would be nice if they used modules rather than patching. Wonder if they ever plan to do that given they have been using patches for so long now. The kernel patch is the only reason I tend to stay away from win4lin. But dispite that I am looking to try it but I can't get a kernel from gs sources to boot. Getting a kernel panic unable to mount root fs. My root is reiserfs and it is complied into the kernel. Grub config is ok.. Are there any other kernels that have support other than gs and win4lin kernel?
