High fps/choppy graphics nvidia problem

  • Quote

Post by Herself » Thu Oct 11, 2007 6:56 pm

Hello,

When I run anything that requires 3d acceleration (it doesnt matter if its compiz/glxgears/ut or enemy territory) I get high fps but the video is choppy. It pisses me off, since I have to reboot to windows (everything works fine there) everytime I want to play games although they have linux ports. I have a GeForce 7300 GS on PCI-e.

Things I have tried and gave no effect:
* Changing sound settings
* Disabling AGPART
* Disabling MTRR (some memory was uncacheable)
* Disabling Compiz-fusion
* Disabling TV-OUT
* Changing various settings in xorg.conf and nvidia-settings

Useful info:
xorg.conf - http://phpfi.com/268303
lspci - http://phpfi.com/268304
glxinfo - http://phpfi.com/268305
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/registry - http://phpfi.com/268306

media-video/nvidia-settings ver. 1.0.20070621
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers ver. 100.14.19
x11-base/xorg-x11 ver. 7.2
x11-base/xorg-server ver. 1.3.0.0

I would appreciate any help because google doesnt know much about this problem...

I think I might have the same problem. Whenever stuff starts getting a little busy with 3D, I get lots of dropped frames.

Here you are.
Also, I intalled xubuntu 7.10 for a test and everything works fine there. Xorg.conf is not at fault, tested it. Here you can see my kernel config, maybe something is terribly wrong there?

Sorry to say I can't find any errors with that :( You tried the right things by disabling composite and TV. I would have thought one of those might be the culprit. Re the kernel config removing vesa-tng is a longshot, you're probably okay with it. All I can suggest is to re-run "eselect opengl set nvidia" again, restart X.

Unfortunately removing vesa-tng or running eselect didnt solve anything. I still wonder why the heck does it work in xubuntu and doesnt work on my gentoo :?

"Choppy" means very little. Explain. Turn vsync on.

For example, in glxgears. They rotate smoothly and every 1-2 seconds there is a stop for about 0.1 0.2 second. On xubuntu they run very smoothly without this problem.
Same with fps games, every 1-2 seconds there is a short stop which really prevents me from shooting anything :P (xubuntu and windows - no problem there)
The compiz splash screen and cube rotate also suffer from this, making it look like the system is too slow. Ofcourse turining compiz off doesnt do anything and glxgears/games still get choppy.

I have about ~400mb of ram free and the cpu usage is at ~20-30% when using the pc with compositing enebled, so i dont think that it is a performance problem. UT gets 120+ fps and glxgears show about 2000+.

Try noapic as a kernel option in grub.

Hi Herself!

I took a look in your Kernel-Config, and see you have set your

Code: Select all

CONFIG_HZ=250
CONFIG_HZ_1000:
1000 Hz is the preferred choice for desktop systems and other systems requiring fast interactive responses to events.
Change your Timer Frequency to 1000. Its not a Big difference but a fine one.
With your Settings i couldn't watch a Movie in mplayer without stutter.

Oh and don't launch games from KDE/Gnome with Beryl. Its better/faster to use a small Windows Manager like Fluxbox.
The best: You don't have to reboot. Just a log out to kdm/gdm, change your session to fluxbox and launch. the game from there.
