I'm gonna be going back to the college dorm this fall, and that means college lan w/ lots of great files I can get from people's share. In windows I would use share scan, but is there a program like this that will scan an smb network for shared files in linux?

if you use KDE you can scan a samba network with net-misc/komba2
Puffy saves.

Hello,

I think this might be what you are looking for:

http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/net-analyzer/nbtscan.xml

A console based NetBIOS name information scanner.

nbtscan doesnt do share scanning. if you want a console based tool try share scan.

if you want a gui based scanner and prefer gnome then use net-misc/gnomba
Puffy saves.

Gnome is not a requirement, it should work fine in flux.
Meh.

anyways - the easiest way to scan a computer for smb-shares is by using smbclient!

Code: Select all

smbclient --list //machine

you can use LinNeighborhood to browse shares without gnome or kde (to be precise without qt or gtk) but it comes without filemanager, you can only browse computers and launch an external filemanager to browse the content of the shares. but i suppose fluxbox is shipped with a filemanager, if not you can launch mc from within LinNeighborhood

I'd vote for LinNeighborhood. Though smbclient is much more powerful, еspecially taken together with nmap.
