OK, problem has been partially solved. During another cycle of applying random patches on ALSA sources, selecting snd_hda_intel model, etc., I've finally managed somehow to get my card working. Despite the fact that the sound is played nicely, I'm experiencing some new problems.

Firstly, when headphones are plugged in the speakers aren't automatically muted, and secondly, the microphone volume is low which results in terrible quality of recorded sound. I'll try to google around for a solution, but if you could be so kind and post here you experiences with these problems I'd be very grateful.

check out this link http://www.linuxlogin.com/hardware/dv6575us.php., he says that he could successfully install the sound driver, but I'm kind of a newbe, I know there is a howto in gentoo-wiki.com but currently that site is down, can someone tell me how to do it?

Great! now I have sound, the 9999 packages already have the necessary patches, I'm using the 2.6.22-r4 kernel, but when I plug the headphones the internal speakers doesn't turn off.

I've came to a conclusion that choosing model=toshiba was the only useful thing I've done to make my card play any sound. What is important however, is including option snd_hda_intel model=toshiba at the beginning of /etc/modules.d/alsa. As far as understand, placing it at the end won't do anything as the module has been already loaded.

Finally, I got ALSA working on Compal FL90 :D

1. ALSA disabled in kernel.
2. Sound support compiled as module.
3. Emerged:

Code: Select all

media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14a-r1
media-sound/alsa-driver-9999
media-sound/alsa-headers-9999
4. Edited /etc/modules.d/alsa:
# Alsa kernel modules' configuration file.

# ALSA portion
# OSS/Free portion

option snd_hda_intel model=acer

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##
## ALSA portion
## alias snd-card-0 snd-interwave
## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
## OSS/Free portion
## alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
##

# OSS/Free portion - card #1
## OSS/Free portion - card #2
## alias sound-service-1-0 snd-mixer-oss
## alias sound-service-1-3 snd-pcm-oss
## alias sound-service-1-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.14 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
I don't trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn't die.

I have a Zepto 6625WD and got it working using the driver-pack from realtek's homepage. Other than what they do, remember to set model=toshiba as described elsewhere in this thread. And presto! :D

In fact, I described the whole install-experience here. It's from an Ubuntu POV, but the tweaks I had to do are universal, I guess.

I have a Toshiba Tecra A7, with the same audio device

Code: Select all

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
and I had a similar problem :

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-5 ... ght-.html

I read this post, 3stack worked great and resolved anything!!!

Thanks :D :D :D :D

P.S. I post my /etc/modules.d/alsa

Code: Select all

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.14 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=3stack

As I understand it is more of a feature than a bug :) My motherboard (with intel-hda sound) manual says that if the headphone output module (the question arise if you have a front panel sound connection) respects HDA specifications then sound can be simuLtaneously played through headset and speakers (probably, even different sound !)

THANK YOU SO SO SO VERY MUCH !!!

:D :D :D :D :D

p.d.: If other people have problems getting the sound to work maybe you should check in your /etc/init.d folder:

Code: Select all

8.0K -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5.6K Oct 26 11:55 alsasound
8.0K -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6.3K Oct 19 10:45 alsasound.backup
8.0K -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5.6K Oct 26 11:27 alsasound.new.backup
8.0K -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6.3K Jul 26 21:44 alsasound.old
The realtek driver doesn't overwrite the alsasound file, it saves a new file names alsasound.new and until you
rename or delete the old alsasound file and rename the new file to alsasound YOUR WILL NOT GET ANY KIND OF
SOUND :?. Hope this help

I had a Toshiba Tecra A8, this was how I got sound working. It works through headphones fine as standard, but to get the speakers working you need to modify existing alsa lines so that they end up looking like this:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=basic
once you've found a line similar to this, and made it look like this, sound works fine. Should be in /etc/modprobe.conf or the /etc/modprobe.d/ directory and the alsa sound config file. I never did it in Gentoo, but did in Ubuntu and Fedora no problems, so it will be possible in Gentoo. And mine was a Realtek ALC262 as well.

Hi all - Iv'e got a Tohiba Tecra A6 laptop, and getting sound to work nearly killed me. After Googling around and trying numerous different things I ended up getting it working by adding a "modules=3stack" argument to etc/modules.d/alsa. But after all the fooling around I'm not sure if anything else I did was important - e.g. loading the latest masked alsa drivers. So for what it's worth, here's what I've got:

uname -a

Code: Select all

Linux albatross 2.6.22-gentoo-r2 #10 SMP Sat Sep 8 12:04:31 EST 2007 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
alsa modules:

Code: Select all

albatross ~ # equery list alsa
[ Searching for package 'alsa' in all categories among: ]
 * installed packages
[I--] [M~] media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14a-r1 (0)
[I--] [M~] media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.14 (0)
[I--] [M~] media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.14 (0)
I--] [M~] media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14 (0.9)
Full /etc/modules.d/alsa file:

Code: Select all

# Alsa kernel modules' configuration file.

# ALSA portion
# OSS/Free portion

##
## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.
## Read alsa-driver's INSTALL file in /usr/share/doc for more info.
##
## ALSA portion
## alias snd-card-0 snd-interwave
# OSS/Free portion - card #1

#alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
#alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
#alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.

# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.14 ---
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
lspci output for the sound card (my nickname for the ICH7 controller is "The Devil's Spawn"):

Code: Select all

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Unknown device ff00
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
        Memory at d8400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2

Capabilities: [70] Express Unknown type IRQ 0
        Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel

So good luck to anyone else trying to get Intel HDA sound working !

Hi Paul,
Why are you not using 1.0.15? It's in e.g. kamikaze-sources.
I actually got sound working in early September, so I guess that's when I loaded what was then the latest versions of alsa.

I was cruising the forums today, wondered if anyone else was suffering similar pain, and thought I'd record my experience in case it helped anyone. Now that sound is working I will NOT be touching anything to do with alsa - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it !!".

BTW, Forgot to mention that I'm getting an error message on startup - "XXX write TLV..", which comes out straight after the "Restoring Mixer Levels as ALSA initialises. This is just a red herring - which I followed for a while in case that was what was stopping the sound working. I vaguely remember finding something via Google saying it was a debug message that should be removed from the ALSA source. That may have happened already, but there's no way I'm touching my working sound configuration !!

Cheers,

I have the same card and I've compiled it into the kernel as a module. A

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modules.d/alsa
gives me the same result except for the last line. I'd remove the mode=basic or whatever it is you have after you snd-hda-intel line.

<ignore my reponse, I hadn't read the entire thread>

Hi,
I had the same problem and i found the solution :
kernel :

Code: Select all

 uname -r
2.6.22-suspend2-r2
Alsa not in kernel with the version :

Code: Select all

equery l alsa-driver
[ Searching for package 'alsa-driver' in all categories among: ]
 * installed packages
[I--] [ ] media-sound/alsa-driver-9999 (0)
The problem is on the version of the model specified in /etc/modules.d/alsa :

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modules.d/alsa
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.14 ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel index=0
## The important line below :
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=lenovo
I hope it will help :)
My 2 cents

Edit: oups i missed the model of my card
my laptop : Asus F9 series

Code: Select all

cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfebf8000 irq 23

Thanks, it also works for me :)

For those whose microphone volume is too low, the boost option may not be explicitly called "boost". My microphone boost switch is called "IEC958" in the mixer.

Then learn how to use your package manager.

Code: Select all

put this in your /etc/portage/package.keywords file and then re-emerge the alsa stuff.

Code: Select all

>=media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.15
>=media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.15
>=media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.15
>=media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.15
I had a similar problem on my Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop and installing the new alsa drivers helped me out.
