Firefox crashing every time

I think that this may have started with the latest ~x86 GTK upgrade, but I'm not sure. All other GTK apps work fine.

My only guess is that it has to do with fonts or something, but I'm not sure where to go from here. Have run revdep-rebuild and recompiled gtk, firefox, glib, etc. Thanks.

One of the most frequent causes for firefox always crashing like this is a plugin or extension.

Try moving your config directory (`mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla-bak`) and then try it, if that doesn't help try geting rid of whatever plugins you have (flash, java or any media player plugins).

Correction, it did open the main window, but then crashed when I tried to open up the Preferences dialog with a similar backtrace.

So "/usr/lib/nsplugins" is completely empty?

I'd recommend revdep-rebuild and re-emerging firefox here, but you've already done that.

I'm not sure which arch you're on, but how about trying the binary firefox package (mozilla-firefox-bin)?

At least that should give you an idea whether the problem is with your build of firefox, or some library on your system.

I'll post a "me too" to this problem. Worse, my backtraces are much less useful than what was posted here, even after setting the DEBUG useflag. An "emerge -e mozilla-firefox" did not help either. Could this be related to the pango upgrade that just went through ~x86?

Switching to firefox-bin did not help. Also tried recompiling pango, fontconfig, cairo. Did not help.

Another "me too". Though it's only happened a couple of times with firefox, I'm getting the same errors with thunderbird, whenever I try to write an email.
I'm recompiling glibc at the moment.

Edit: that didn't help, though sometimes I get a segfault instead now.

Looks like I've found a solution.

I was using the Plastig theme for GTK, which uses the gtk-qt-pixmap engine. Makes everything look good under KDE. I switched to the default GTK theme, and Firefox now runs fine -- it's just kind of ugly.

Weird, changing the theme has fixed it for me too. I like Aurora though... And the problem must not be with the gtk-qt-pixmap engine, since I don't have that installed.

Edit: I shouldn't say that fixed it, it must be a bug with thunderbird/firefox or a function the theme's are using

The GTK2 theme switcher (switch2) is segfaulting when I try to run it. gdb shows the last library loaded before crashing is libfontconfig.so.1 so I'm revdep-rebuilding in the hope of a solution. In the meantime what is the "manual" way to change themes?

Downgrading gtk+ to version 2.10.14 did it for me, I also suggest to mask all >=x11-libs/gtk+-2.12.0 ebuild until this is reported a resolved matter.

Thanks, I'll revert the other thing's I've been trying and confirm if it works here too.

resolved my "Everything GTK+ crashes" problem but not Firefox. I've enabled DEBUG use flag, set sane CFLAGS and re-emerged GTK+, glib, pango, fontconfig, and cairo. Next is Firefox to see if that either resolves the problem or at least gives me more useful backtraces. Hopefully a solution will present itself shortly.

I was full of hope for this workaround until I found I am still on 2.10.14

I have founf this is somehow related to Opera usage. If I start opera first ffx segfaults as soon as I try to open an URL (could be content ralated , insuffiecient data) , it can open to blank page.

If I close opera, ffx usually comes up fine and diplays youtube content etc. no issues. I can normally open opera afterwards without it causing further issues.

One final twist : I just got ffx up then opera but ffx locked up on youtube and I needed to xkill it. Nothing is left in ps ax but ffx refuses to start now:

restarting X failed to clear it , last ditch reboot now but I doubt.

Don't know if my problem relates to this or not, but on
two different machines, one ~386 the other ~amd64. Firefox
runs just fine but if I open "preferences" it hangs and I must
do a force quit. I backed the ~x86 machine back to firefox-2.0.0.6
and it still fails. The ~amd64 machine is still at firefox-2.0.0.7 but
I did go back to GTK+-2.12.0-r1, and no difference. I am taking firefox
on that system to 2006 and will update with results.

Can you try downgrading glib to 2.10?

This appears to be a bug in either glib or gtk+, most likely glib given the dying function is g_closure_invoke().

gtk+-2.10.14 solved the problem for me as well, however it looks like
more trouble than its worth to keep it there. So I'll just continue to
upgrade until the problem gets fixed. By the way besides not being able
to go into preferences, I can't create a bookmark.
