glxgears
36447 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7289.340 FPS
29736 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5947.114 FPS

Nvidia doesn't use exa, so the exa option will have no impact with a nvidia card.

It does if you're using the open source 'nv' drivers.

Given the amount of fluctuation you really have to let it run a lot longer to make any conclusions. And remember: glxgears is a bad benchmark for anything.

Well i tried Xorg 7.3, too.
But i found out, that when i use "evdev" for the mouse, it is freezed although i re-emerged evdev.
The second issue ist, that when i switch vom German to US Layout on the Keyboard, the keys are wrong until i switch back to DE Layout.
The third thing is, that my hotkey "win+alt+-" in Openbox results in a wrong action.

So it seems, that we have to wait for newer packages of the xf86-input ebuilds.

And yes my LEDs don't work, too :)

I would love to try those out to see for myself but the problem is that those drivers dont support my hardware. I have a Geforce 4 MX4000 in this machine and I need the 96xx driver series. I know im living in the stone age with this card, but it is a work machine and thats all I can get for it.

Mine works with the --ignoreABI option for now but it is only a matter of time before not even that will work if Nvidia doesn't plan on releasing a new 96XX series driver to support Xorg 7.3. You also have to make sure that Composite is disabled too.

However some people are not able to make this work like I have.

They'll release a driver for legacy cards soon with support for xorg 7.3 and newer kernels (2.6.23). At least that's what i read from one of the nvidia developers on their forums.
Never argue with an idiot. They will only pull you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

I have this problem where I can't use the new Xorg as a regular user but can as root.

Code: Select all

That's the error the xorg log is throwing at me.

I had this problem too, but re-emerging evdev and doing dispatch-conf got it working again. However I now have the weirdest of problems. If I play any 3d game (i tested ut2004 and quake4) with the evdev driver the mouse moves extremely weird, like its in some kind of jelly! I tested with the standard mouse driver and the mouse worked ok there (except it doesn't pick up my extra mouse buttons automatically like evdev, so evdev ftw :)). Can anyone else here test a game in full screen with the evdev driver and see if they have the same weird mouse movement? I say test in fullscreen because if you run the game windowed it works fine. Doubt it makes a difference but I'm using xfce anyway.
And yes my LEDs don't work, too :)
Noticed this too. Was very strange. And having to recompile the drivers a second time to get them to work was a bit silly. So much for improved hotplugging support eh.

I had a pretty troublesome update, I couldn't get it to work until I rebooted the system.

BTW xorgcfg == sweet

I'm trying new xorg as well, except the led problem I have the problem with mouse. It's not exactly the same, but it's really wired! I didn't try evdev, but with the standard mouse driver mouse motion in Quake3.... is really strange. It looks like my mouse just doesn't react on really slow movements. If I would start moving mouse _really_ slow the pointer stays at the same position :( This behavior applies only for Quake3 and in X mouse works fine, so I think it's somehow opengl related.

anyone have any ideas about this? Its not an xorg.conf problem. Its my user is being denied access to the X server. I don't know what to do about this one. Spent most of the night seeing if adding my user to different groups would work. Can anyone think of a reason why xauth would be blocking my user access to X?

EDIT:
(SOLUTION)

What you need to do if you have this error is delete .Xauthority in /home/(your user)

Alright, so what's the big thing with Xorg 7.3? I upgraded...that was a hassel. Now everything looks exactly the same, I get about the same fps in games. What can it do that the older versions can't?

I just setup 7.3 with the new Radeon drivers. xf86-video-ati-6.7.193.

Its working great so far. havnt really bothered with dri yet tho as it is a work laptop. what i do want is duel screen working properly. now it seems with 7.3 its all moved to randr and out of the driver which is good. but it seems randr has a limitation of 2560 as the max width... is there a way around this or do we just have to sit back and wait?

ok i have seemed to sort it out. you have to set the virtual command under your display depth. :D now to work on dri

a good page

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2

EDIT:

Ok DRI working now.... this has been really easy... no need for windows at work now.

when i run glxgears i do get this

libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x63

anyone know if this is an issue?

Thank you for the info. As I mentioned already, mouse works fine in X server, but not in opengl games. Would it be still my case?
EDIT: Why it happends only with the new xorg server, while the mouse driver is the same for both of them?

That's a known issue with the new Xorg version. Same here. I think they did not release a fix yet...

Downgrade

  • Quote

Post by naseweis » Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:33 pm

How can I downgrade safely?
I ran into a couple of problems (terrible xv performance with mplayer, artifacts and crashes) after I upgraded to xorg-7.3 although I could get everything working (including linuxwacom).
As I really need my video performance back, I decided to downgrade but ran into problems with xf86-input-keyboard, which wouldn't compile.
Any advice?
