Any way to force gspca to use a specific device number?

Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

Any way to force gspca to use a specific device number?

I have a mythtv box with a PVR-350 using ivtv that's been running great for a long time now. I recently added a webcam (Logitech Communicate STX) and got it working with the gspcav1 driver.

The problem is that the webcam seems to come up as /dev/video0 or /dev/video1 randomly, and if it claims the video0 device then ivtv uses video1 for capture, and this make mythtv very unhappy.

Is there some way to force gspca to use a specific device id? I'd rather not reconfigure my mythtv system.

On another note, what's the difference between gspca and gspcav1? Is the v1 version just for V4L v1? It seems to be newer than the gspca driver so I though it would be a better choice.

You can solve that by writing udev rules. There's a bunch of sources for info on that, and looking at the stuff in /etc/udev/rules.d will give you a pretty decent idea as to how they work. As for the driver versions, the naming is screwy, but gspcav1 is the latest version and is the same as the gspca driver, only newer, and both are an update of the old spca5xx driver. All of them use V4L1, as the new V4L2 rewrite hasn't been finished yet. See the homepage:
