Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

[SOLVED] can't play sound in aplay or audacious

Hi, I'm having trouble getting sound to play through ALSA with Audacious. It was working until a few days ago when I performed an update with emerge. My sound driver modules all load fine and I can play sound through OSS, but when I select ALSA playback in Audacious I get this error message:

Code: Select all

Couldn't open audio.

Please check that:
1. You have the correct output plugin selected.
2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard.
3. Your soundcard is configured properly.
Trying to play a wav file with aplay gives me this:

Code: Select all

Playing WAVE 'earth.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:961: Unable to install hw params:
ACCESS: RW_INTERLEAVED
FORMAT: U8
SUBFORMAT: STD
SAMPLE_BITS: 8
FRAME_BITS: 8
CHANNELS: 1
RATE: 11025
PERIOD_TIME: (21333 21334)
PERIOD_SIZE: (235 236)
PERIOD_BYTES: (235 236)
PERIODS: (15 17)
BUFFER_TIME: (341315 341316)
BUFFER_SIZE: 3763
BUFFER_BYTES: 3763
TICK_TIME: 0
Here's some output from dmesg:

Code: Select all

ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:04.0 disabled
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:04.0[A] -> Link [APCJ] -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 18
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:04.0 to 64
intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 54779 usecs
intel8x0: clocking to 46954
What's strange is that Amarok will play sound using xine -> ALSA but I can't get ALSA to work with aplay or Audacious. Please help me :) Thanks!

Same problem for me. Audacious can play when device hw:0,0 is used, default device isn't working.
