Tha'ts exactly what I'm waiting for. XAA with the newest drivers do not allow me to use xv output. EXA works using xserver 1.3 but the performance is worse than unaccelerated video and text scrolling is 100 times slower. I'm hoping the EXA improvements mentioned on the Xorg page fix these issues.

Personally I want it for the new version of RandR so I can use compiz-fuzion on my tri-monitor setup!

No luck upgrading yet. When I upgrade I get an X error saying something about an inconsistency with ld.so and dl-open.

I'm running the new x.org atm.
At first it would freeze on startup, but disabling the hal use flag fixed it.
Now it seems nvidia-drivers is blocking xorg-server, a bit annoying since I'm already running it with nvidia, and can't upgrade to -r1.
How many Microsoft Programmers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: It cannot be done. You will need to upgrade your house.

I've done xorg-server-1.4-r1 and x11-base/xorg-x11-7.3 on two ~x86 boxes. You need to remerge all your x11-drivers after you reboot and X doesn't start.
Main box- AsRock x370 Gaming K4
Ryzen 7 3700x, 3.6GHz, 16GB GSkill Flare DDR4 3200mhz

OpenRC Gentoo ~amd64 plasma, glibc-2.41-r2, gcc-15.1.0

It doesn't work with nvidia drivers for me (compiled with -hal, composite disabled) so I'm currently using nouveau.

Until the new nvidia drivers are out you need to start xorg-server 1.4 with startx -- -ignoreABI

I know that, but X just freezes and the log doesn't show anything useful.

That thing broke my window decorator and now avant-window-navigators draws upon a black strip.... And I can't downgrade, because libXcomposite asks for the newest compositeproto, which is incompatible with xorg-server-1.3...

Of course, you need to downgrade them all.

EDIT, people using binary drivers should remember to never use ~arch on xorg and read the docs before updating if you are doing so.

It is not the first -nor last- time that an xorg update changes the ABI. And when the ABI changes, and you can't recompile the drivers (cause they are binary packages supplied by nvidia) you are screwed. There's no mystery on that.

I'm running xorg-x11 7.3 right now on my ThinkPad X60s. After a reboot, my X won't come up. The problem was something with the mouse and some ABI stuff. After recompiling those modules/packages (it seems, that I emerged them before merging the new proto packages) my X was running, but the mouse was frozen. So, I made a backup of my xorg.conf, deleted the old one, executed 'X -configure' and placed new newly created xorg.conf.new into /etc/X11. Now I have X running again. Looks fine, but I didn't test any new feature except 'xrandr --auto' (which automatically activates a external monitor, if present), but this was working before, too.

While playing some google video in konqueror and listening to music with amarok and hacking remotely in yakuake my X crashed and restarted. Don't know why. Maybe some bugs, or some missing newer packages. I think, there will be some stabilization patched available in near future.

It crashes with no useful information, though, as somebody else said. Just for reference, how long has it taken nVidia to fix this kind of thing and release an updated driver other times the ABI has changed and broken their driver?

Well, FWIW, I use xorg's radeon driver, and all libXcomposite versions in portage depend on the newest compositeproto, so I can't see how I can downgrade x11 without uninstalling libXcomposite and/or hacking the ebuilds.

Of course, I can wait without dock and a window decorator till awn and compiz's teams get up to date...

What graphics card are you using? I have a T60 with Intel graphics and the new X will not start for me. I ran "emerge -auDv xorg-x11" and then rebuilt all the drivers against the new Xserver. I noticed on some forums the mention of libpciaccess, which is supposedly required by the newest video drivers but it isn't in portage. I tried the overlay but that doesn't do a thing. The same thing happens whether or not I build libpciaccess or I don't so I guess it is uneeded but I don't know what else I am doing wrong.

Ummm, let's look.

Currently, I have this[

Code: Select all

[I] x11-libs/libXcomposite
     Available versions:  0.3 (~)0.3-r1 0.3.1 (~)0.3.2 0.4.0 {debug}
     Installed versions: 0.4.0(19:21:14 23/07/07)(-debug)
     Homepage: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/
     Description: X.Org Xcomposite library

[I] x11-proto/compositeproto
     Available versions:  0.3.1 0.4 {debug}
     Installed versions: 0.4(18:34:13 23/07/07)(-debug)
     Homepage: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/
     Description: X.Org Composite protocol headers
Along with xorg-server 1.3 (which means xorg 7.2).

I can't find a single reference to any of the packages above in the ati-drivers ebuilds (grep composite *, reports nothing at all). In addition, the few xorg deps has no version marked in the ebuild, for example, in the .40.4 ebuild I can only see this, in which regards xorg:

Code: Select all

DEPEND="${RDEPEND}
    x11-proto/xf86miscproto
    x11-proto/xf86vidmodeproto"
Am I missing something? What is exactly the problem with previous versions of those libs and your driver?

Ok, I wasn't looking for help as much as I wanted to rant (since I'm using overlays), but here it goes.

xorg-server pulls <x11-proto/renderproto-0.9.3 as a dependency (sorry it's render, not composite), whereas libXrender wanted the newest version, after a few things added to package.mask

Code: Select all

=x11-base/xorg-server-1.4-r1
=x11-base/xorg-x11-7.3
=x11-libs/libXrender-0.9.4
=x11-proto/renderproto-0.9.3
Portage lets me at least to install xorg-server-1.3.0.0. Let's see if it works to its previous stage.

I have been able to get Xorg 7.3 and the Nvidia Binary drivers to work. I guess I am one of the lucky ones that the -ignoreABI option worked for. I did have an issue with the frozen mouse like some have reported. I neded up having to recompile xf86-input-mouse to solve the issue.

So far, it seems to me like this is way faster then before. But maybe I am just happy that stuff is working.

Grrrrr I had 5 hours crowded with black screens of death before I realized that I had no way to get it working even with
-ignoreABI, the worst thing was that there wasn't any error in the log (well, after I reemerged a couple of packages
and removed wacom from the conf file...). Too bad most of the net was saying it could work, however in the end
I rollbacked all xorg as it was the previous day, I'll nevermore understimate the xorg issues on next upgrades.

If you're born distro, no matter what, start to run.

I just updated world and now xorg-server works with nvidia binary drivers :) ... but my keyboard is acting strange :?. Status LEDs for {Num,Caps,Scroll} Lock are frozen (the keys are working) and I can't switch back to VT with <CTRL-ALT-Fn>.
Oh, well ... one step at a time.

Yes, of course, as I wrote above. You could try to do the following. Run

Code: Select all

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge world -uDpv | less
and see if there are any x11 related package which are not in there latest available version, e.g. any x11-drivers/xf86-input-* driver or media-libs/mesa or other x11-libs/* stuff. Update these and then try a generic xorg.conf by logging in as root on the linux console. To generate it, run

Code: Select all

X -configure
. This will probe your hardware and generate a generic xorg.conf.new. You can then test it by running

Code: Select all

X -config xorg.conf.new
That was it. Now you can add some more settings. I added the Option "XkbLayout" "de" to the kbd input device and the following lines to enable composite and render extension.

Code: Select all

Section "DRI"
        Mode 0666
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
        Option "Render" "Enable"
EndSection
Copy that version to /etc/X11 and you are done.
