hostapd and wifi connection -- one nic

  • Quote

Post by iphands » Tue Aug 28, 2007 10:55 pm

I have a machine with one wireless nic (prism based). I am using this one nic to connect to wifi signal (lets call it RemoteAP), but the signal is too weak for other some of my other devices to connect to.
Could I connect to the RemoteAP and, and then via hostapd make an access point (LocalAP), and have other devices connect to the LocalAP?

Or in short, could one wifi nic act as an AP and a Client at the same time?

mabe try the repeater mode

Code: Select all

mode Set the operating mode of the device, which depends on the network topology. The mode can be Ad-Hoc (network composed of only one cell and without
Access Point), Managed (node connects to a network composed of many Access Points, with roaming), Master (the node is the synchronisation master or
acts as an Access Point), Repeater (the node forwards packets between other wireless nodes), Secondary (the node acts as a backup master/repeater),
Monitor (the node is not associated with any cell and passively monitor all packets on the frequency) or Auto.
              Example :
                   iwconfig eth0 mode Managed
                   iwconfig eth0 mode Ad-Hoc

Yes, u can do so with one NIC with both AP and Client. That you only need to configure the NIC as repeater. But i not recommend to use the same NIC, because it downgrade the bandwidth connection for both AP and Client. It will make the connection slow. So, i recommend you to configure the PC with two NIC, which one act as AP and one for client.
