Kernel 2.6Beta with DRI?

  • Quote

Post by Elleomea » Sat Jul 19, 2003 12:46 pm

In the past I've had problems using DRI with my system due to the fact I've got a Radeon 9000 and an nForce 2 board. The latest 2.6Beta has specific support for the nForce 2's odd AGP problems, so I decided this might be useful. So far I haven't had any problems with the kernel itself, everything runs perfectly well as it did under 2.4. But DRI still doesn't work :?. Before I used to get a string of errors complaining about a series of different things, now I only get one:
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
Which isn't very descriptive :?
I'm wondering if I should recompile X now that I'm using a new kernel? Also do I need to emerge xfree-drm? Because it doesn't seem to want to compile with 2.6 :?

Thanks for any help :).

I think the Radeon 9000 is at least R200, so you'll want to use ati-drivers and not xfree-drm.

Anyway, xfree-drm won't compile with kernel 2.6. It's not a bug, it just won't work. If you had a card that should use xfree-drm (which I'm pretty sure you don't), you would have to use the kernel DRM.

Anyway. You won't be able to compile ati-drivers for 2.6, or if you do, they won't help. The ati-drivers package is for 2.4. In other words, you're SOL until an ati-drivers comes out for 2.6.

Crap. I was coming on here to ask about this same thing. Does that mean that those of us with Radeons and kernel 2.6 are stuck with Vesa drivers for now?

Not necessarily. It depends on your card. I've got a 9800, and it works fine in 2D on 2.6 using the radeon driver in the kernel. ATI did briefly release a new set of FireGL drivers with version number 3.2.03 a couple of days ago, which do work with 2.6, but they got pulled after a couple of hours for some reason :( It does seem to indicate that the next release will be 2.6 compatible though.

2.6.0-test1 works without problems with DRI (at least for radeon 9000 mobility that I have). You don't need to emerge xfree-drm, because 2.6 kernel series itself contains the DRM modules that you need to select when you compile the kernel (it's all under the character devices on kernel config). I have been using 2.5 development kernels since december and 3D has worked without problems most of the time.

I don't know if that nforce2 chipset is well supported, but at least my SiS chipset is well supported by kernel agpgart.
