What does the * and % mean in USE? (Pidgin)

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

What does the * and % mean in USE? (Pidgin)

When emerge -uDNav world I get
[ebuild R ] net-im/pidgin-2.1.1 USE="dbus eds gstreamer gtk meanwhile ncurses networkmanager nls perl prediction qq silc spell zephyr -bonjour -debug -doc -gadu -gnutls -groupwise -sasl -tcl -tk (-startup-notification%*) (-xscreensaver%*)"

I have both startup-notification and xscreensaver in my useflags. So my question is why are they not being used, and what does the "%*" in there mean?

tnx Troels

Taken from the emerge man page
- prefix = not enabled (either disabled or removed)
* suffix = transition to or from the enabled state
% suffix = newly added or removed
() circumfix = forced, masked, or removed
Hope this explains it a little better...

Ahhh so the () are what it's all about.

Code: Select all

server linux # dep -j pidgin |head -5
From /usr/portage/net-im/pidgin/ChangeLog:

  23 Aug 2007; Olivier Crête <tester@gentoo.org> pidgin-2.1.1.ebuild:
Removed separate xscreensaver and startup-notification use flags, they are
now enabled by the gtk use flag
