Installing gentoo with Asus p5b

  • Quote

Post by Snoozz » Wed Jan 17, 2007 4:59 pm

Hi guys,

I'ts been a while since I last installed gentoo (about 6 months ago), now I have a new pc:

Conroe E6600@3,2Ghz
asus p5b deluxe (jmicron controller)
nvidia 7950GX2
X-fi xtreme gamer
Benq DVD DC DW1670 (attached to Jmicron)
Seagate S-ATA (so this ISN'T attached to the Jmicron controller)

The minimal 2006.1 gives me the error that you guys already know (the can't find cd to mount bla bla bla).
Do I even have to bother installing gentoo with this settup or is it going to be one problem after another?

I believe the solution for mij Jmicron problem is installing gentoo with the livecd (liek a read on this forum), I must say I REALLY hate gfx installers for linux, can I install gentoo the old fashion way with the live cd or do I have to user the gfx installer?
Also, which sources do I need to use (are the beyond sources still ok with this setup)?

I hope you guys can clarify some things, because I can't see the forest through the trees anymore

Grtz

As I know, you can use the actual (k)ubuntu cd to install Gentoo.

The Jmicron controller is not yet supported by the Gentoo 2006.1 media.

Yet, I found the working live cd here (small-gentoo or something).

It seems to go smoothly, only my X-Fi doesn't work (but I figured as much).

Do you guys think that I'll run in to other problems with this system, or is this about it?

Ok, so, how is it running? Do you just have one drive, or are you doing a raid of sorts? Which kernel did you choose, or, is there not much choice?

Does anyone know of a good discussion getting raid working with this MB? Also, is the raid a "hardware" raid, or some kind of software raid?

I'm thinking of getting one of these. I don't mind a small amount of pain, but I'm definately not a masochist...

Got it running very smoothly now ^^. Compile times are EXTREMLY fast (compiled xorg in under 13 minutes).

I used the latest morph sources :). There is a list of sources that work with this controller, I used these because they're fast :).

ps. I do not use raid on this system, just a single hd :)

Hi,

I've got the P5W DH Deluxe board, and one of the RAID options is to use the EZ-RAID controller - two dedicated ports that only accept two HDs for either RAID0 or RAID1, configured by setting some jumpers on the board. In the BIOS, it appears as one very big IDE HD. It is a hardware solution.

I think the P5B is the same (IIRC).

Intriguing issue with the CD-ROM. I was going to attempt a 2006.0 install. :? Will it be problematic?

* Intel Core2 Duo E6700
* 2Gb PC8500 memory
* 1Tb HD (SATAII)
* GeForce 7950GX2 (PCI-X)
* ASUS P5W DH Deluxe MoBo (i975X Chipset)
* SB Audigy 1 Platinum
* PS/2 KB/Mouse

Best regards,
AstroTux.

OK, at this point i am such a Linux noob that i shouldn't even be allowed to post on such forms. That in mind I have read over all the porblems with installing gentoo on the Asus P5B mobos and the issues with the PATA controller, would you suggest using a USB cdrom to install if you do not yet have a SATA drive?

With the latest kernels (I think since 2.6.21), it should not be a problem any more - as the drivers for the PATA chip are included in the kernel.

However, it could potentially be a problem with some of the Gentoo live CDs - I do not remember what kernel they boot, but if it is older than 2.6.21, you will definitively have problems.

Maybe you should get one of the latest Knoppix or Ubuntu CDs and install from there - there are documents available on how to install Gentoo like this ("alternative installation" or something like this)

I can confirm that the latest installer (2007.0) CD works just fine with the P5B Deluxe. If you have trouble with the minimal install disk try the universal one, I can't remember which one I used. The P5B Deluxe Gentoo Hardware Wiki should be of use to you.
