Yes it hangs at the splash-screen. I have already seen others reporting the issue.
See for example: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=774

hi,

My experience: I have tried several times google earth on gentoo, amd64. Always the same result. It hangs at the splash screen. I have used different versions of ati-drivers/gentoo-sources/suspend2-sources. I have given up to get it working. LAst time I tried was a month ago.

I know that doesn*T help, sorry.

If you want to use graphical applications, use Windows. Especially if you have an ATI card :-(
Linux is just for fun and learning to a better skill. It's useless for a serious job, at least while there are no drivers !

Sorry, but I am so upset to be unable to use some nice apps with Gentoo :-( :-( :-(

Stop the presses .. betcha it's the old libGL.so.1 saga
popping right back at you.

there's been a lot of talk around here on how to solve the hangning
that occurs at the splash.

all ill say is that by replacing the libGL.so.1 by an older one in the
/opt/googleearth directory a lot of us have been able to make it work.

Do make a search for googleearth on the forums , you will
find numerous threads.

There's this once i thought i had made a mistake .. but i was wrong :|

I had the same problem with Google earth and ati-drivers-8.40.4.
The following steps solved the problem for me (running ~x86):

Code: Select all

$ ebuild /usr/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-8.27.10-r1.ebuild unpack
$ cp /var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.27.10-r1/work/arch/x86/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 /opt/googleearth/
$ cd /opt/googleearth
$ ln -s libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1
$ rm -r /var/tmp/portage/x11-drivers/
I tried ati-drivers version 8.39.4 and 8.35.5 but they don't work.

Following the advice of OK and others, I just copied the file from googleearth's directory and put it in my system's library directory. In my case, I'm using the latest version of googleearth, 4.2.0198.2451 but the file name happened to be /opt/googleearth/libGLU.so.1 so I had to change it and copy to /usr/lib64/xorg/libGL.so.1.2 because lots of links were pointing to it. BTW, I didn't know that the libGL file came with the googleearth distribution. Thanks to everyone's help, I got googleearth running again. Its a great app.
